Commentary on the Koran: Surah 100 “Those That Run”
Pickthall
Translation; Bible Quotes are from the English Standard Version unless
otherwise noted.
Introduction
Al-A’adiyat takes its name from a word in the first verse which
Pickthall has rendered as “Coursers.” It
has the meaning of those running in competitive pursuit. The meaning of the
first five verses is not clear to the Muslim translators. The words “snorting”
and “sparks of fire” indicate a mounted pursuit. They are “scouring” in a raid
at dawn; cleaving together as one in the centre. They are violent in their love
of wealth and are ingrates to the Lord God.
They are all told that
in the resurrection their Lord will know all concerning them.
*****
100.1. By
the snorting courses,
100.2. Striking sparks of fire
100.3. And
scouring to the raid at dawn,
100.4. Then, therewith, with their trail of dust,
100.5. Cleaving, as one, the centre (of
the foe),
Horses and their
riders charging into enemy combatants in the early hours of dawn raising clouds
of dust and causing sparks of fire by the friction between their hoofs and the
gravel beneath their feet. A scenario of war from the past battles of Islam
against their enemy forces. In modern warfare air force fighter planes execute
bombing strikes against enemy fortifications in the early dawn causing fires
and dust from demolished structures. So too the messengers of God rise up early
to deliver the warning messages assigned to them and draw fire and scorn from
the disbelievers. Soon they will see fire and dust storms when their entire
structures are demolished by Messiah and his armies.

Matthew 23:34-35 Therefore I send you prophets and wise men and scribes, some of whom you will kill and crucify, and some you will flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town, 35so that on you may come all the righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar.
Zephaniah 1:14-17 The great day of the LORD is near, near and hastening fast; the sound of the day of the LORD is bitter; the mighty man cries aloud there. 15A day of wrath is that day, a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness, 16a day of trumpet blast and battle cry against the fortified cities and against the lofty battlements. 17I will bring distress on mankind, so that they shall walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the LORD; their blood shall be poured out like dust, and their flesh like dung.
100.6. Lo! man is an ingrate unto his Lord
100.7. And
lo! he is a witness unto that;
100.8. And lo! in the love of wealth he is
violent.

Zechariah 7:11-12 But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder and stopped their ears that they might not hear. 12They made their hearts diamond-hard lest they should hear the law and the words that the LORD of hosts had sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great anger came from the LORD of hosts.
