Commentary on the Koran: Surah 98  “The Clear Proof”

Pickthall Translation; Bible Quotes are from the English Standard Version unless otherwise noted.

Introduction

Al-Beyyinah takes its name from a word in the first verse. There is no certainty as to the date of revelation.  Many regard it as a Late Beccan Surah.  The Mushaf attributes it to 1 AH as the probable date of revelation and Pickthall follows this view as he has done throughout his translation.

The text refers to those who err and disbelieve among “the people of the Scriptures” and also the idolaters. They could not have but erred until they were given clear proof.

98.1. Those who disbelieve among the People of the Scripture and the idolaters could not have left off (erring) till the clear proof came unto them,

Romans 5:12-13 Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— 13for sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law.

Romans 3:20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

1John 3:4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.

There is no sin involved when there is no awareness of the law. We are made aware of sin when we have the knowledge of what the law says. A distinction can be made between the law abiding and those who disbelieve and transgress the law when the law has being clearly expounded to the people. Scripture provides the clear evidence showing man in the way he should go in this physical life, but sadly man has chosen to go his own way and he will reap the dire consequences of his choice.

98.2. A messenger from Allah, reading purified pages

98.3. Containing correct scriptures.

Refer to:

2Timothy 3:16 and Deuteronomy 29:29 in  Commentary on the Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020) at ayat 6 and Matthew 5:17 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030) at ayat 30.

Acts 3:22 Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you.

98.4. Nor were the People of the Scripture divided until after the clear proof came unto them.

1Corinthians 11:18-19 For, in the first place, when you come together as a church, I hear that there are divisions among you. And I believe it in part, 19for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized.

Isaiah 9:16 for those who guide this people have been leading them astray, and those who are guided by them are swallowed up.

Refer to 2Peter 3:16-17 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 60 (No. Q060) at ayat 6.

98.5. And they are ordered naught else than to serve Allah, keeping religion pure for Him, as men by nature upright, and to establish worship and to pay the poor-due. That is true religion.

James 1:27 in Commentary on Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030) at ayat 30; Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 33 (No. Q033 at ayat 2 and Deuteronomy 10:12-13 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 38 (No. Q038) at ayat 29.

1Samuel 15:22 And Samuel said, “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.

Mark 12:33 And to love him with all the heart and with all the understanding and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

98.6. Lo! those who disbelieve, among the People of the Scripture and the idolaters, will abide in fire of hell. They are the worst of created beings.

Refer to:

Revelation 20:11-15 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 15; Revelation 21:8 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 23 (No. Q023)  at ayat 98 and Matthew 25:41 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030) at ayat 16.

98.7. (And) lo! those who believe and do good works are the best of created beings.

98.8. Their reward is with their Lord: Gardens of Eden underneath which rivers flow, wherein they dwell for ever. Allah hath pleasure in them and they have pleasure in Him. This is (in store) for him who feareth his Lord.

Ephesians 1:4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love.

Galatians 6:9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

Note that the Gardens of Paradise are identified with the Gardens of Eden in verse 8 which equates with the areas of the Middle East at Eden where the City of God (No. 180) will also be placed.
