Commentary on the Koran: Surah 92 “The Night”

Pickthall Translation; Bible Quotes are from the English Standard Version unless otherwise noted.

Introduction

Al-Leyl is a Very Early Beccan Surah as part of the initial witness of the faith at Becca. It takes its name from verse one as a commencement.

From the darkness follows the day resplendent and then the revelation of God who created them.

The text is in three structures of seven as 21 verses. The first concerns the relvelation of God. The second concerns the disbelievers who hoard their wealth and do no goodness. The third concerns the Flaming Fire as the end of only the most wretched of mankind. Those who seek to do the will of God will be content.

92.1. By the night enshrouding

92.2. And the day resplendent

Refer to:

Isaiah 45:7 I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the LORD, who does all these things.

Just as the day and the night will appear at the right time so we can depend on His timing in all matters as He will not fail us and all of His promises will be fulfilled. He has not failed His creation in the past nor will He fail us in the future. So that day of the Lord will be here soon.

92.3. And Him Who hath created male and female,

Refer to Genesis 5:2 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 51 (No. Q051) at ayat 49.

Matthew 19:4 He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female,

Ecclesiastes 2:11 Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.

Ecclesiastes 1:3 What does man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun?

Mark 8:36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?

92.5. As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah)

92.6. And believeth in goodness;

92.7. Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease.

Refer to:

Psalm 37:4 Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

1Corinthians 2:9-10 But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— 10these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.

Acts 20:35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

All things belong to God for He created all things. If He takes our spirit we will all return to the dust. Only God has life in himself and He will grant us that spiritual life when we have qualified for it through wholehearted obedience to Him.
