Commentary on the Koran: Surah 88
“The Overwhelming”
Pickthall
Translation with Bible Quotes from the English Standard Version unless
otherwise noted.
Introduction
Al-Gashiyah takes its name from the text in verse 1. It is an early Beccan Surah like the texts
before it. They point to the structure of the Host and the Resurrection to
Judgement. The fruit of the labour of the sinners bears no nourishment and
leads to judgment.

The division of the elect and the sinners is a recurrent theme of the
texts and the unrepentant are destroyed in the Lake of Fire. The Most High (S
087) has decided this and given judgment to the elect under Messiah as we see
from the texts in the Surahs above and from Scripture.
