Commentary on the Koran: Surah 43 “The Gold
Adornments”
Pickthall Translation; English Standard Version Bible
Quotes throughout unless otherwise noted.
Introduction
Surah XLIII Az-Zukruf or “The Gold Ornaments” or adornments (also
called “Ornaments of Gold” from the word meaning “Golden Ornaments” in verse
35. These refer to the disbelievers that
seek the riches of this world such as the “doors of silver” and the “ornaments
of gold” to no avail.
It is the Fourth of the
Ha Mim Surahs written in the Middle Group of Beccan Surahs. It refers to the Scriptures and is here summarised to be made plain to the Arabs as a Quran. This
word is translated as “lecture” as it makes clear that the Scriptures are
rendered as a Quran to the Arabs in Arabic so they might understand. However,
only the called will understand as the texts show again and again. The Hadithic Imams pretend that the Scriptures were lost and
the terms refer only to the Koran which is false.
The text attacks the
false teachings of the idolatrous Arabs and their failure to follow the
Scriptures. The Prophet reinforces the roles of Moses and Jesus, the Messiah,
who gave the laws and commandments of God (v. 63). He also reiterates (in v. 81) that the Benificent One had no son (meaning by procreation, in that
the Messiah was one of the creation born by divine fiat as we see in the
previous Surahs).

Mim.
43.2. By
the Scripture which maketh plain,
43.3.
Lo! We have appointed it a Lecture, in Arabic that haply ye may understand.
43.4. And
Lo! in the Source of Decrees, which We possess, it is indeed sublime, decisive.

and your understanding in the sight of the peoples, who, when they hear all
these statutes, will say, 'Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding
people.'
Proverbs 2:6 For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and
understanding;
So then we see that God
sent the prophets to the men of old and they ignored them or mocked them or
worse.
43.5. Shall
We utterly ignore you because ye are a wanton folk?
43.6. How
many a prophet did We send among the men of old!
43.7. And
never came there unto them a prophet but they used to mock him.
43.8.
Then We destroyed men mightier than these in prowess; and the example of the
men of old hath gone (before them).

ways! 34"For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has
been his counselor?" 35"Or who
has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?" 36For from
him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

as they do not have the same strength as males and are more vulnerable in
battle or in difficult circumstances. It is not so with God.

to the Beneficent One, his countenance becometh black
and he is full of inward rage.

hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in
their throat.
1Samuel 12:21 And do not turn aside after empty things that
cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty.

have worshipped them. They have no knowledge whatsoever of that. They do but
guess.

Tarikh” for these many titles.)
43.21. Or have We given them any scripture before (this Qur'an) so that
they are holding fast thereto?
43.22. Nay,
for they say only: Lo! we found our fathers following a religion, and we are
guided by their footprints.
43.23. And even so We sent not a warner before thee
(Muhammad) into any township but its luxurious ones said: Lo! we found our
fathers following a religion, and we are following their footprints.
43.24. (And the warner) said: What! Even though I
bring you better guidance than that ye found your fathers following? They
answered: Lo! in what ye bring we are disbelievers.
43.25. So We requited them. Then see the nature of the consequence for the
rejecters!

Mark
7:9 And he said to them, "You
have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your
tradition!
God destroyed them as He
said he would because they refused to heed the warnings of the prophets sent to
them and mend their evil ways. They just went along in the traditions of their
ancestors who knew no better and worshipped the gods of the nations around
them. The idolaters at Becca retained their
traditions and rejected the Commandments of God and the Faith and Testimony of
Moses and the Messiah and the prophets. For that they are again warned and if
they do not repent they will be destroyed.
43.26. And when Abraham said unto his father and his folk: Lo! I am innocent
of what ye worship
43.27.
Save Him Who did create me, for He will surely guide me.
43.28. And he made it a word enduring among his seed, that haply they might
return.
43.29. Nay, but I let these and their fathers enjoy life (only) till there
should come unto them the Truth and a messenger making plain.
43.30. And now that the Truth hath come unto them they say: This is mere
magic, and lo! we are disbelievers therein.

Koran: Surah 22 (No. Q022).

of the two towns?
43.32. Is it they who apportion thy Lord's mercy? We have apportioned among
them their livelihood in the life of the world, and raised some of them above
others in rank that some of them may take labour from
others; and the mercy of thy Lord is better than (the wealth) that they amass.

40.29 in Surah 40 above.

righteous will flourish like a green leaf.

whom there is no salvation.
43.33. And were it not that mankind would have become one community, We might
well have appointed, for those who disbelieve in the Beneficent, roofs of
silver for their houses and stairs (of silver) whereby to mount,
43.34. And
for their houses doors (of silver) and couches of silver whereon to recline,
43.35. And
ornaments of gold. Yet all that would have been but a provision of the life of
the world. And the Hereafter with your Lord would have been for those who keep
from evil.

1John 2:16-17 at ayat 18.8 Commentary on the Koran:
Surah 18 (No. Q018).

your guard against all covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the
abundance of his possessions.”
2Corinthians 4:17-18 For this light momentary affliction is preparing
for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, 18as we
look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the
things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.
1Peter 3:3-4 Do not let your adorning be
external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry,
or the clothing you wear— 4but let your adorning be the hidden
person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit,
which in God’s sight is very precious.
Here we see that the
demons are allowed to take over the influence of those who disbelieve (cf. also
1Cor. 5:5). In this way they might be saved in the retraining of the Second
Resurrection.
43.36. And he whose sight is dim to the remembrance of the Beneficent, We
assign unto him a devil who becometh his comrade;
43.37. And lo! they surely turn them from the way of Allah, and yet they deem
that they are rightly guided;
43.38. Till, when he cometh unto Us, he saith (unto his comrade): Ah, would that between me and
thee there were the distance of the two horizons - an evil comrade!

ye did wrong, that ye will be sharers in the doom.

this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is

end is the way to death.

blind or him who is in error manifest?

but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.'
Mark 4:12 so that "they may indeed see but not perceive,
and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they should turn and be
forgiven."
43.41. And if We take thee away, We surely shall take vengeance on them,
43.42. Or (if) We show thee that wherewith We threaten them; for lo! We have
complete command of them.
Psalm 94:1-2 O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth! 2Rise
up, O judge of the earth; repay to the proud what they deserve!
Hebrews 10:30 For we know him who said, "Vengeance is mine;
I will repay." And again, "The Lord will judge his people."
Deuteronomy 32:35 Vengeance is mine, and recompense, for the time
when their foot shall slip; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and their
doom comes swiftly.
43.43. So hold thou fast to that which is inspired in thee. Lo! thou art on a
right path.
43.44. And
lo! it is in truth a Reminder for thee and for thy folk; and ye will be
questioned.

from every form of evil.
Philippians 1:9-11 And it is my prayer that your love may abound
more and more, with knowledge and all discernment, 10so that you may
approve what is excellent, and so be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11filled
with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory
and praise of God.
Colossians 1:10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully
pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the
knowledge of God.
43.45. And ask those of Our
messengers whom We sent before thee: Did We ever appoint gods to be worshipped
beside the Beneficent?
Genesis 5:22 Enoch walked with God after he fathered
Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters.
Genesis 6:9 These are the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation. Noah walked with God.

foreign god.
43.46. And verily We sent Moses with
Our revelations unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, and he said: I am a messenger of
the Lord of the Worlds.
43.47. But when he brought them Our tokens, behold! they laughed at them.
43.48. And
every token that We showed them was greater than its sister (token), and We
grasped them with the torment, that haply they might turn again.
Exodus 4:21 And the LORD said to Moses, "When you go back to Egypt, see that
you do before Pharaoh all the miracles that I have put in your power. But I
will harden his heart, so that he will not let the people go.
Exodus 7:10-12 So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as
the LORD commanded. Aaron cast down his staff before Pharaoh and his servants,
and it became a serpent. 11Then Pharaoh summoned the wise men and
the sorcerers, and they, the magicians of Egypt, also
did the same by their secret arts. 12For each man cast down his
staff, and they became serpents. But Aaron's staff swallowed up their staffs.
43.49. And
they said: O wizard! Entreat thy Lord for us by the pact that He hath made with
thee. Lo! we verily will walk aright.
43.50. But when We eased them of the torment, behold! they broke their word.
Exodus 8:10-15 And he said, "Tomorrow." Moses said,
"Be it as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like the LORD
our God. 11The frogs shall go away from you and your houses and your
servants and your people. They shall be left only in the Nile." 12So
Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried to the LORD about the
frogs, as he had agreed with Pharaoh. 13And the LORD did according
to the word of Moses. The frogs died out in the houses, the courtyards, and the
fields. 14And they gathered them together in heaps, and the land
stank. 15But when Pharaoh saw that there was a respite, he hardened
his heart and would not listen to them, as the LORD had said.
43.51. And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying:
O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing
under me? Can ye not then discern?
Egypt was ruled by Pharaoh because God had placed him in that position.
See Daniel 4:17 at ayat
40.29 in Surah 40 above.
43.52. I am surely better than this
fellow, who is despicable and can hardly make (his meaning) plain!
1Corinthians 1:25 For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and
the weakness of God is stronger than men.
Here we see one base
leader looking down on the messenger from the Almighty God.
43.53. Why, then, have armlets of
gold not been set upon him, or angels sent along with him?
John 4:48 So Jesus said to him, "Unless you see signs
and wonders you will not believe."
The miracles took place
in their midst yet had no effect on them. They wanted to see Moses with an
entourage of angels alongside him.
43.54. Thus he persuaded his people to make light (of Moses), and they obeyed
him. Lo! they were a wanton folk.
43.55. So,
when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one.
43.56. And
We made them a thing past, and an example for those after (them).
See 1Corinthians 10:11 at ayat
43.8 above.
Exodus 15:4 Pharaoh's chariots and his host he cast into the sea, and his chosen
officers were sunk in the Red Sea.
43.57. And when the son of Mary [Maryam] is quoted
as an example, behold! the folk laugh out,

Mark 6:2-4 And on the Sabbath he began to teach in the
synagogue, and many who heard him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man
get these things? What is the wisdom given to him? How are such mighty works
done by his hands? 3Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary [Maryam] and brother of James and Joses
and Judas and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us?” And they took
offense at him. 4And Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor, except in his hometown and among his relatives and
in his own household.”
43.58. And say: Are our gods better, or is he? They raise not the objection
save for argument. Nay! but they are a contentious folk.
43.59. He
is nothing but a slave on whom We bestowed favour,
and We made him a pattern for the Children of Israel.

the world might be saved through him.

replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God."

John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through Me.
See Acts 4:12 at ayat 42.6 in Surah 42 above.
All beings generated by
God Almighty are pleased to be His slaves. They prefer to be slaves to righteousness
as they want to serve God wholeheartedly. Christ set the standard for us by
being obedient unto death. God gives us everything good and cares for us in an
awesome way. Being a slave to a wonderful beneficent God is a blessing.
43.60. And had We willed We could
have set among you angels to be viceroys in the earth.

those who are to inherit salvation?
Psalm 91:11 For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your
ways.
Angels carry out their
