Commentary on the Koran: Surah 40
“The Believers”
Pickthall
Translation: Bible quoted from English Standard Version unless otherwise noted.
Introduction
Al Mumin, “The Believer” takes its name from verses
28-45 describing the attempts of a believer in the house of Pharaoh to dissuade
his people from opposing Moses and Aaron. It is more appropriately termed The
Believers.
This text is the first of seven Surahs beginning
with the letters Ha Mim and all of which are referred
to as the Ha Mim.
It is from the Middle Group of Beccan Surahs although some
authorities claim verses 56 and 57 were revealed at Al Medinah.
The text concerns mankind from Noah through the
messengers sent to mankind and the disbelievers. It goes on to the punishment of the Second
Death making reference to the two lives granted mankind and the two deaths
allotted to the disbelievers at the end of the Judgment (verses 10-22). Then
from verse 23 we see the disbelievers who refuse to repent in the faith. God sent
Moses to Egypt and to Haman the Amalekite and to Korah the Israelite regarding their rebellion and
disbelief.
The end of the disbelievers is stated from verses
50-85. In verse 51 we see that the
messengers are aided by God to assist those who believe in the life of the
world and when the Witnesses arise (cf. Revelation 11:3ff) and this reference
is to the Witnesses. From verse 53 we
see that Moses was given the guidance and Eloah caused
the Children of Israel to be given the Scriptures. They maintain this responsibility
to this day and it is not placed with Judah nor their converts but with the Ten
Tribes and the Churches of God.

ye were called unto the faith but did refuse.

but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days, for the young man

That text means that that the end of the
Second Resurrection anyone who is unrepentant and still sinning will be
allowed to die and be sent to the fire.

period they are reeducated and retrained to lead them to repentance. If he or
she does not repent they will die the second time and then they are cremated in
the lake of fire.
40.12. (It is said unto them): This

some partner was ascribed to Him ye were believing. But the command belongeth only to Allah, the Sublime, the Majestic.

40.21. Have they not travelled in

them? They were mightier than these in power and (in the) traces (which they
left behind them) in the earth. Yet Allah seized them for their sins, and they
had no protector from Allah.
40.22. That was because their messengers
kept bringing them clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty) but they disbelieved;
so Allah seized them. Lo! He is Strong, severe in punishment.

17.16 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017).
Wealth and power could not save the evildoers of
earlier generations who did not repent of their evil deeds when warned to do so
by the messengers nor will the communities extant at this time be saved if they
continue in their lawlessness. No one has defied the Almighty God and
succeeded.
40.23. And verily We sent Moses with
Our revelations and a clear warrant
40.24.
Unto Pharaoh and Haman and Korah, but they said: A
lying sorcerer!
Moses was instructed in great detail on how to take Israel out of slavery. The
law was revealed through him. Pharaoh, Haman and Korah
were associated with rebellion. He dealt with each and their forces. Haman is
significant because the Amalekites in the last days
are the Arabs, their descendants.
Exodus 14:30 Thus the LORD saved Israel that day from
the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore.
Numbers 26:10 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them
up together with Korah, when that company died, when
the fire devoured 250 men, and they became a warning.
John 1:17 For the law was given through Moses;
grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
40.25. And when he brought them the
Truth from Our presence, they said: Slay the sons of those who believe with
him, and spare their women. But the plot of disbelievers is in naught but
error.
Exodus 1:16-17 "When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women
and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you
shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live." 17But
the midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but
let the male children live.
40.26.
And Pharaoh said: Suffer me to kill Moses, and let him cry unto his Lord. Lo! I
fear that he will alter your religion or that he will cause confusion in the
land.
Proverbs 21:30 No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel
can avail against the LORD.
Psalm 33:10 The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
God’s servants do not cause confusion. The
minions of the adversary have caused the confusion to appear on the earth as
they do as they please.
40.27. Moses said: Lo! I seek refuge
in my Lord and your Lord from every scorner who
believeth not in a Day of Reckoning.
Psalm 62:7 On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is
God.
See
2Thessalonians 1:8-9 at ayat 38.27
in Surah 38.
40.28. And a believing man of
Pharaoh's family, who hid his faith, said: Would ye kill a man because he saith: My Lord is Allah, and hath brought you clear proofs
from your Lord? If he is lying, then his lie is upon him; and if he is
truthful, then some of that wherewith he threateneth
you will strike you. Lo! Allah guideth not one who is
a prodigal, a liar.
It seems possible that a believer in Pharaoh’s
household pointed out the obvious to Pharaoh. Moses was empowered to perform the
miracles in the sight of the Egyptians.
Remember that there was a mixed multitude of
600,000 people who came out with the Israelites from Egypt.
Acts 5:38-39 So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them
alone, for if this plan or this undertaking is of man, it will fail; 39but
if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be
found opposing God!" So they took his advice,
Proverbs 19:9 A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish.
40.29.
O my people! Yours is the kingdom to-day, ye being uppermost in the land. But
who would save us from the wrath of Allah should it reach us? Pharaoh said: I
do but show you what I think, and I do but guide you to wise policy.
Refer to Romans 1:18 at ayat 18.59
Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 18 (No. Q018).
Proverbs 14:12 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its
end is the way to death.
Daniel 4:17 The sentence is by the decree of the watchers, the
decision by the word of the holy ones, to the end that the living may know that
the Most High rules the kingdom of men and gives it to whom he will and sets
over it the lowliest of men.
This Pharaoh and his army paid with their lives by
resisting the Most High God.
40.30. And he who believed said: O
my people! Lo! I fear for you a fate like that of the factions (of old);
What the believer feared for his people actually came to pass.
Exodus 15:4 "Pharaoh's chariots and his host he cast into the sea, and his
chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea.
40.31. A plight like that of Noah's folk, and A'ad
and Thamud, and those after them, and Allah willeth no injustice for (His) slaves.
This is a reference to previous tribes and communities who denied the
messengers sent to them and were destroyed through ruin and calamities.
Job 34:12 Of a truth, God will not do wickedly, and the Almighty will not pervert justice.
40.32. And, O my people! Lo! I fear
for you a Day of Summoning,
Pharaoh and his hosts came to a watery grave in this physical life and were
consigned to face intensive corrective
training in the resurrection.
40.33. A day when ye will turn to flee, having no preserver from Allah:
and he whom Allah sendeth astray, for him there is no
guide.
There will be no escape on that day when no
intercession is possible.
Proverbs 10:17 Whoever heeds instruction is on the path to life,
but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.
Proverbs 21:16 One who wanders from the way of good sense will
rest in the assembly of the dead.
40.34. And verily Joseph brought you
of old clear proofs, yet ye ceased not to be in doubt concerning what he
brought you till, when he died, ye said: Allah will not send any messenger
after him. Thus Allah deceiveth him who is a
prodigal, a doubter.
They probably stayed away from some wrongdoing while Joseph and the Pharaoh who
raised him were in charge but soon after that they reverted to their
lawlessness once again. It was the same in Israel.
Judges 2:19 But whenever the judge died, they turned back and were more corrupt than
their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them.
They did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways.
So it was also with the Qureysh at Becca.
Man easily forgets the God who shows them mercy.
Joseph would have guided them during his lifetime but they went back to their
evil ways after having been saved as a nation and also being used to save the
surrounding nations at that time. After Joseph died there arose a pharaoh that
did not know him and began to punish Israel.
40.35. Those who wrangle concerning the revelations of Allah without
any warrant that hath come unto them, it is greatly hateful in the sight of
Allah and in the sight of those who believe. Thus doth Allah print on every
arrogant, disdainful heart.

hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.

Refer to Proverbs 6:16-19 at ayat
17.53 Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017).
40.36. And Pharaoh said: O Haman!
Build for me a tower that haply I may reach the roads,
40.37. The roads of the heavens, and
may look upon the God of Moses, though verily I think him a liar. Thus was the
evil that he did made fairseeming unto Pharaoh, and
he was debarred from the (right) way. The plot of Pharaoh ended but in ruin.
Genesis 11:3-7 And they said to one another, "Come, let us
make bricks, and burn them thoroughly." And they had brick for stone, and
bitumen for mortar. 4Then they said, "Come, let us build
ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the heavens, and let us make a
name for ourselves, lest we be dispersed over the face of the whole
earth." 5And the LORD came down to see the city and the tower,
which the children of man had built. 6And the LORD said,
"Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is
only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do
will now be impossible for them. 7Come, let us go down and there
confuse their language, so that they may not understand one another's
speech."
The nations
acted in vain and the Egyptians also were punished.
Psalm 2:1 Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain?
Psalm 33:10 The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to
nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
All their schemes are eventually laid in ruin
and their plans come to nothing.
40.38. And he who believed said: O
my people! Follow me. I will show you the way of right conduct.
1Corinthians 11:1 Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.
1Thessalonians 1:6 And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for
you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit,
40.39. O my people! Lo! this life of
the world is but a passing comfort, and lo! the Hereafter, that is the enduring
home.

40.40.
Whoso doeth an ill-deed, he will be repaid the like thereof, while whoso doeth
right, whether male or female, and is a believer, (all) such will enter the
Garden, where they will be nourished without stint.
Romans 2:6-8 He will render to each one according to his works: 7to those
who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor
and immortality, he will give eternal life; 8but for those who are
self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be
wrath and fury.

And, O my people! What aileth me that I call you unto
deliverance when ye call me unto the Fire?
40.42. Ye call me to disbelieve in
Allah and ascribe unto Him as partners that whereof I have no knowledge, while
I call you unto the Mighty, the Forgiver.
40.43.
Assuredly that whereunto ye call me hath no claim in the world or in the

consequence for those before them? They were more numerous than these, and
mightier in power and (in the) traces (which they left behind them) in the

They choose to travel but only choose to see what they want to see. They choose
what they like to read but do not want to read ancient history and come to know
what went on before. The generations of old were more numerous and more
powerful and they left the evidence of that for future generations to examine if
they are only willing. Their power and wealth could not deliver them when destruction
