Commentary on the Koran: Surah 36 “Ya Sin”

Pickthall Translation; English Standard Version unless otherwise noted.

Introduction

Yas Sin is generally held to signify Yah Insan (O Man). This Surah is held by scholars to be a Surah held in special reverence and is recited in adversity, illness, fasting and on the approach of death.

As stated this is a Middle Beccan Surah and is intended to warn the Beccans whose fathers were held to not have been warned. The Beccans are stated here to have been made a stiff necked people and their warnings are irrelevant as they are stiff necked and will not believe.

The text refers to the open opponents of God and the Beccans who worship the god Hubal or Baal and the Goddess. They keep neither the Sabbath, the Covenant (4:154), nor the message of the Koran and they will be punished soon.

36.1. Ya Sin.

36.2. By the wise Qur'an,

36.3. Lo! thou art of those sent

36.4. On a straight path,

36.5. A revelation of the Mighty, the Merciful,

36.6. That thou mayst warn a folk whose fathers were not warned, so they are heedless.

36.7. Already hath the judgment, (for their infidelity) proved true of most of them, for they believe not.

36.8. Lo! We have put on their necks carcans reaching unto the chins, so that they are made stiff-necked.

36.9. And We have set a bar before them and a bar behind them, and (thus) have covered them so that they see not.

36.10. Whether thou warn them or thou warn them not, it is alike for them, for they believe not.

Refer to Deuteronomy 29:29 at ayat 21.15 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 21 (No. Q021), 2Peter 1:21 at ayat 29.48 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 29 (No.Q029) and 2Timothy 3:16-17 at ayat 30.30 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030).

Nehemiah 9:30 Many years you bore with them and warned them by your Spirit through your prophets. Yet they would not give ear. Therefore you gave them into the hand of the peoples of the lands.

Isaiah 44:18 They know not, nor do they discern, for he has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, and their hearts, so that they cannot understand.

Exodus 34:6 The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, “The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,

Psalm 24:8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle!

See Nehemiah 9:26 at ayat 35.26 above.

Only the elect are chosen and called.

36.11. Thou warnest only him who followeth the Reminder and feareth the Beneficent in secret. To him bear tidings of forgiveness and a rich reward.

John 6:44 No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.

Acts 2:38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.

Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.

Hebrews 9:15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.

Revelation 5:10 and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.

36.12. Lo! We it is Who bring the dead to life. We record that which they send before (them, and their footprints. And all things We have kept in a clear Register.

It is the One True God that determines the lives and the resurrections of the dead and to which resurrection each is allocated.

Refer to John 5:28-29 at ayat 30.19 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030).

Job 14:5 Since his days are determined, and the number of his months is with you, and you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass,

Psalm 139:16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.

Job 7:1 Has not man a hard service on earth, and are not his days like the days of a hired hand?

1Timothy 5:24-25 The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. 25So also good works are conspicuous, and even those that are not cannot remain hidden.

Read also Revelation 20:12 as quoted at ayat 17.15 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017).

The multitude of the messengers sent to them are listed and before the Prophet they had two messengers from the Apostles and the Churches of God. Beside those they had the messengers of Abraham (S XIV), Jonah (S X) and Moses and Aaron (S III ff), Hud (S XI) and Salih, Joseph (S XII), The Thunder (S XIII); Al Hijr (S XV) and Those Who Set the Ranks (S XXXVII) and for this reason it occurs in this order as S36 before S37.  See also the Fate of the Twelve Apostles (No. 122B).

So they are three groups of three among Patriarchs and prophets and then the three prophets of God in the Last Days.

36.13. Coin for them a similitude: The people of the city when those sent (from Allah) came unto them;

36.14. When We sent unto them twain, and they denied them both, so We reinforced them with a third, and they said: Lo! we have been sent unto you.

36.15. They said: Ye are but mortals like unto us. The Beneficent hath naught revealed. Ye do but lie!

36.16. They answered: Our Lord knoweth that we are indeed sent unto you,

36.17. And our duty is but plain conveyance (of the message).

36.18. (The people of the city) said: We augur ill of you. If ye desist not, we shall surely stone you, and grievous torture will befall you at our hands.

36.19. They said: Your evil augury be with you! Is it because ye are reminded (of the truth) ? Nay, but ye are froward folk!

Jeremiah 25:4 You have neither listened nor inclined your ears to hear, although the LORD persistently sent to you all his servants the prophets,

Jeremiah 35:15 I have sent to you all my servants the prophets, sending them persistently, saying, 'Turn now every one of you from his evil way, and amend your deeds, and do not go after other gods to serve them, and then you shall dwell in the land that I gave to you and your fathers.' But you did not incline your ear or listen to me.

See Nehemiah 9:26 at ayat 35.26 above.

Refer to 2Chronicles 36:16 at ayat 30.10 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030) and Luke 16:31 at ayat 29.48 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 29 (No.Q029).

They have their heads buried in the sand they see nothing and they perceive nothing. They have been brainwashed by the lies they have been told ever since the beginning of time. The veil on their minds will remain until it is removed in the Second Resurrection. Some, but not many, will be saved alive for the millennial system, with a few converted in the Last Days.

36.20. And there came from the uttermost part of the city a man running. He cried: O my people! Follow those who have been sent!

36.21. Follow those who ask of you no fee, and who are rightly guided.

So also “buy the truth but sell it not” (Pro. 23:23).

However they killed the rightly guided, both as caliphs and leaders of the Church of God.

Philippians 3:17 Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us.

Hebrews 13:7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.

Isaiah 8:16, 20 16Bind thou up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.

20To the law and to the testimony! if they speak not according to this word, surely there is no morning for them. (ERV) [or no Dawn in them].

36.22. For what cause should I not serve Him Who hath created me, and unto Whom ye will be brought back?

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Ecclesiastes 12:7 and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it.

36.23. Shall I take (other) gods in place of Him when, if the Beneficent should wish me any harm, their intercession will avail me naught, nor can they save?

36.24. Then truly I should be in error manifest.

Jeremiah 25:6 Do not go after other gods to serve and worship them, or provoke me to anger with the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm.'

1Samuel 12:21 And do not turn aside after empty things that cannot profit or deliver, for they are empty.

Jeremiah 10:5 Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field, and they cannot speak; they have to be carried, for they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.”

Jeremiah 16:19 O LORD, my strength and my stronghold, my refuge in the day of trouble, to you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth and say: “Our fathers have inherited nothing but lies, worthless things in which there is no profit.

36.25. Lo! I have believed in your Lord, so hear me!

Deuteronomy 13:4 You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear him and keep his commandments and obey his voice, and you shall serve him and hold fast to him.

Deuteronomy 18:19 And whoever will not listen to my words that he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.

Luke 10:16 “The one who hears you hears me, and the one who rejects you rejects me, and the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”

36.26. It was said (unto him): Enter paradise. He said: Would that my people knew

36.27. With what (munificence) my Lord hath pardoned me and made me of the honoured ones!

Refer to Revelation 20:6 at ayat 23.11 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 23 (No. Q023).

Ephesians 1:7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,

Ephesians 1:14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

36.28. We sent not down against his people after him a host from heaven, nor do We ever send.

36.29. It was but one Shout, and lo! they were extinct.

Psalm 35:8 Let destruction come upon him when he does not know it! And let the net that he hid ensnare him; let him fall into it—to his destruction!

Psalm 55:15 Let death steal over them; let them go down to Sheol alive; for evil is in their dwelling place and in their heart.

Job 34:20 In a moment they die; at midnight the people are shaken and pass away, and the mighty are taken away by no human hand.

36.30. Ah, the anguish for the bondmen! Never came there unto them a messenger but they did mock him!

36.31. Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them, which indeed returned not unto them;

Refer to 2Chronicles 36:16 at ayat 30.10 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030).

Empires fall no matter how mighty they may be. Their might and power did not save them when they had become evil and corrupted. Mankind needs to repent and turn away from their evil ways and heed the warnings of the messengers sent to them and return to the correct worship of the One True God and deal justly with their fellow man if they want to survive as a species.

However, they will survive whether they wish it or not and then be brought to reeducation and judgment.

36.32. But all, without exception, will be brought before Us.

Hebrews 9:27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,

2Corinthians 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

36.33. A token unto them is the dead earth. We revive it, and We bring forth from it grain so that they eat thereof;

The dead earth is a sign to mankind. It is brought back to life after the rains have watered the earth. The resurrection to physical life in the Second Resurrection is the same.

Refer to Isaiah 55:10 at ayat 30.19 and Daniel 12:2 at ayat 30.57 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030).

Psalm 71:20 You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again.

36.34. And We have placed therein gardens of the date-palm and grapes, and We have caused springs of water to gush forth therein,

36.35. That they may eat of the fruit thereof, and their hands made it not. Will they not, then, give thanks?

Psalm 104:13-15 From your lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work. 14You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth 15and wine to gladden the heart of man, oil to make his face shine and bread to strengthen man's heart.

Psalm 65:9 You visit the earth and water it; you greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water; you provide their grain, for so you have prepared it.

Psalm 107:8 Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man!

36.36. Glory be to Him Who created all the sexual pairs, of that which the earth groweth, and of themselves, and of that which they know not!

Philippians 4:20 To our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Genesis 1:20-21 And God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the heavens." 21So God created the great sea creatures and every living creature that moves, with which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Genesis 1:24 And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds—livestock and creeping things and beasts of the earth according to their kinds." And it was so.

Genesis 6:19 And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female.

Genesis 1:29 And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food.

Genesis 9:3 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you. And as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything.

So also God set the bounds of the food fit for man and laid it out in the Food Laws (No. 015).

Psalm 104:14 You cause the grass to grow for the livestock and plants for man to cultivate, that he may bring forth food from the earth

We consume what is clean and lawful to eat. Refer to Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14 for the legislation on the food laws.

36.37. A token unto them is night. We strip it of the day, and lo! they are in darkness.

36.38. And the sun runneth on unto a resting-place for him. That is the measuring of the Mighty, the Wise.

36.39. And for the moon We have appointed mansions till she return like an old shrivelled palm-leaf.

36.40. It is not for the sun to overtake the moon, nor doth the night outstrip the day. They float each in an orbit.

When the light is removed it becomes dark. In a spiritual sense when light is removed  understanding is removed and their minds are darkened.

Ephesians 4:18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.

Psalm 74:16 Yours is the day, yours also the night; you have established the heavenly lights and the sun.

Ecclesiastes 1:5 the sun rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it rises.

Psalm 19:6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.

Psalm 104:19 He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting.

Job 26:9 He covers the face of the full moon and spreads over it his cloud.

36.41. And a token unto them is that We bear their offspring in the laden ship,

36.42. And have created for them of the like thereof whereon they ride.

36.43. And if We will, We drown them, and there is no help for them, neither can they be saved;

36.44. Unless by mercy from Us and as comfort for a while.

Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Psalm 107:23 Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters;

See Job 34:14-15 at ayat 35.4 above.

If He were to drown them they cannot be saved.
No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the LORD as noted in Proverbs 21:30.

Lamentations 3:22 The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end;

36.45. When it is said unto them: Beware of that which is before you and that which is behind you, that haply ye may find mercy (they are heedless).

36.46. Never came a token of the tokens of their Lord to them, but they did turn away from it!

Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live,

Galatians 6:7-8 Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. 8For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.

Psalm 139:5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.

Hebrews 4:16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

God’s signs are all there for men of understanding, the others just go about their daily lives without noticing anything unusual.

36.47. And when it is said unto them: Spend of that wherewith Allah hath provided you, those who disbelieve say unto those who believe: Shall we feed those whom Allah, if He willed, would feed? Ye are in naught else than error manifest.

Isaiah 58:10 if you pour yourself out for the hungry and satisfy the desire of the afflicted, then shall your light rise in the darkness and your gloom be as the noonday.

Proverbs 11:25 Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.

James 2:15-16 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that?

36.48. And they say: When will this promise be fulfilled, if ye are truthful?

Refer to 2Peter 3:9 and Habakkuk 2:3 at ayat 30.60 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030).

They await the shout of the archangel at the First Resurrection. At the Second they are sent to judgment and correction. They can do nothing then.

36.49. They await but one Shout, which will surprise them while they are disputing.

36.50. Then they cannot make bequest, nor can they return to their own folk.

36.51. And the trumpet is blown and lo! from the graves they hie unto their Lord,

36.52. Crying: Woe upon us! Who hath raised us from our place of sleep? This is that which the Beneficent did promise, and the messengers spoke truth.

36.53. It is but one Shout, and behold them brought together before Us!

1Thessalonians 4:16-17 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. 17Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.

1Corinthians 15:52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.

Hebrews 9:27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,

See  2Corinthians 5:10 at ayat 36.32 above and refer to Daniel 12:2 at ayat 30.57 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030).

36.54. This day no soul is wronged in aught; nor are ye requited aught save what ye used to do.

Psalm 28:4 Give to them according to their work and according to the evil of their deeds; give to them according to the work of their hands; render them their due reward.

Lamentations 3:64 You will repay them, O LORD, according to the work of their hands.

Revelation 22:12 Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done.

36.55. Lo! those who merit paradise this day are happily employed,

36.56. They and their wives, in pleasant shade, on thrones reclining;

36.57. Theirs the fruit (of their good deeds) and theirs (all) that they ask;

36.58. The word from a Merciful Lord (for them) is: Peace!

Romans 2:6-7 He will render to each one according to his works: 7to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life;

2Peter 3:13-14 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 14Therefore, beloved, since you are waiting for these, be diligent to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace.

Psalm 118:1 Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!

Refer to Revelation 20:6 at ayat 23.11 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 23 (No. Q023).

36.59. But avaunt ye, O ye guilty, this day!

36.60. Did I not charge you, O ye sons of Adam, that ye worship not the devil - Lo! he is your open foe!

36.61. But that ye worship Me? That was the right path.

36.62. Yet he hath led astray of you a great multitude. Had ye then no sense?

36.63. This is hell which ye were promised (if ye followed him).

36.64. Burn therein this day for that ye disbelieved.

36.65. This day We seal up their mouths, and their hands speak out to Us and their feet bear witness as to what they used to earn.

36.66. And had We willed, We verily could have quenched their eyesight so that they should struggle for the way. Then how could they have seen?

36.67. And had We willed, We verily could have fixed them in their place, making them powerless to go forward or turn back.

Refer to Luke 4:8 at ayat 29.59 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 29 (No.Q029) and Matthew 25:41 at ayat 30.16 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030).

1Peter 5:8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

2Corinthians 2:11 so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.

Jeremiah 25:6 Do not go after other gods to serve and worship them, or provoke me to anger with the work of your hands. Then I will do you no harm.’

Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

1Timothy 5:24-25 The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment, but the sins of others appear later. 25So also good works are conspicuous, and even those that are not cannot remain hidden.

See Job 34:14-15 at ayat 35.4 above.

Read Revelation 20:11-15 as quoted at ayat 17.15 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017).

If He withdrew His spirit and His breath they would die. He is able to accomplish whatever He will.

Jeremiah 18:6 O house of Israel, can I not do with you as this potter has done? declares the LORD. Behold, like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.

Isaiah 64:8 But now, O LORD, you are our Father; we are the clay, and you are our potter; we are all the work of your hand.

36.68. He whom we bring unto old age, We reverse him in creation (making him go back to weakness after strength). Have ye then no sense?

We grow in strength from a helpless babe fully dependent upon its mother to a full grown adult and then go downhill until we are weak in old age.

Psalm 144:3-4 O LORD, what is man that you regard him, or the son of man that you think of him? 4Man is like a breath; his days are like a passing shadow.

Job 14:1-2  “Man who is born of a woman is few of days and full of trouble. 2He comes out like a flower and withers; he flees like a shadow and continues not.

36.69. And We have not taught him (Muhammad) poetry, nor is it meet for him. This is naught else than a Reminder and a Lecture making plain,

36.70. To warn whosoever liveth, and that the word may be fulfilled against the disbelievers.

See Deuteronomy 29:29 at ayat 21.15 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 21 (No. Q021) and 2Timothy 3:16 at ayat 30.30 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030).

Psalm 34:14 Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

1Peter 3:11 let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it.

Psalm 92:7 that though the wicked sprout like grass and all evildoers flourish, they are doomed to destruction forever;

36.71. Have they not seen how We have created for them of Our handiwork the cattle, so that they are their owners,

36.72. And have subdued them unto them, so that some of them they have for riding, some for food?

36.73. Benefits and (divers) drinks have they from them. Will they not then give thanks?

Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth."

Genesis 18:7-8 And Abraham ran to the herd and took a calf, tender and good, and gave it to a young man, who prepared it quickly. 8Then he took curds and milk and the calf that he had prepared, and set it before them. And he stood by them under the tree while they ate.

2Samuel 17:29 honey and curds and sheep and cheese from the herd, for David and the people with him to eat, for they said, “The people are hungry and weary and thirsty in the wilderness.”

Romans 1:21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Apart from beef we get milk, cheese, yogurt, butter and cream and make ice cream. Others may include sour cream, cottage cheese, whey, cream cheese and many more. Yet man seems to give little thanks for the bounties of God.

36.74. And they have taken (other) gods beside Allah, in order that they may be helped.

Man is conceived from the seed of his parents, just like milk from a liquid is processed into the curd which then is processed into cheese. The embryo in the mother’s womb gradually solidifies into a firmer tender mass.
