Commentary on the Koran: Surah 72 “The Jinn”

Pickthall Translation; Bible Quotes are from the English Standard Version unless otherwise noted.

Introduction

Al-Jinn has a number of applications and can refer to the elemental Spirits of the Heavenly Host and then refer to the demons in rebellion to God and also to those under their influence in the nations. Thus the Arabs referred to them as “clever foreigners” in relation to those humans of the Nations. It is a later Beccan Surah attributed to the return of the Prophet from his failed mission to the Ta’if.

The reference to the nations under the Jinn  are to those under the rulers appointed by Eloah in Deuteronomy 32, and where the nation of Israel was placed under the Christ as the future ruler of the world as we see in verse 8 and also the (Morning) Star that was to come out of Jacob in Numbers 24:17. This is referred to as the Surah  Al-Tarikh “The Morning Star” (Surah 86) below, dealing with the death of the Christ. The Masoretic Text (MT) of 32:8 was altered to read sons of Israel instead of sons of God as we know from the texts of the LXX and the DSS and which has been corrected by the RSV translation team.

The traditional view was that the nations were 72, based on the heavenly throne, and the human host was organised in that number. So also Moses, under instruction from the Yahovah of Israel we know to be the Christ, organised the elders of Israel into the Sanhedrin at Sinai, referred to as the Seventy but always organised as 72. In the same manner the church was ordained as the Seventy in Luke 10:1 and 17 (cf. Fate of the Twelve Apostles (No. 122B)) but always it was written as the Hebdomekonta (Duo) in the Koine Greek, which was Seventy (Two) as the leadership of the church from over the two thousand years of the Forty Jubilees in the wilderness. The apostles and prophets and elders of the faith became the 144,000 and the Great Multitude of the First Resurrection.

This Surah on the Jinn is placed in its order and is numbered as 72 in the Koran based on the significance of the number of nations and their placement under the Demons or Jinn of the god of this world, who is Satan (for the time being) (2Cor. 4:4). It is part of the seal of the elect and the church at Becca.

72.1. Say (O Muhammad): It is revealed unto me that a company of the Jinn gave ear, and they said: Lo! we have heard a marvellous Qur'an,

72.2. Which guideth unto righteousness, so we believe in it and we ascribe no partner unto our Lord.

Quoting from the CCG Sabbath Message by Wade Cox at http://www.ccg.org/weblibs/2006-messages/nm_02_28_06.htm… “In the early days of the Church it was believed that a number of demons repented after the sacrifice of Christ and the church leaders attributed their success to the repentance of the governing demon of that city or area. It was the common view of antiquity that the god of the city or nation state was represented there and in charge of the area and its spirit.”

So the angelic beings who repented must have had access to the inspired words of Scripture.

Refer to Isaiah 46:9-10 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 111 and 2Timothy 3:16 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030) at ayat 30.

James 2:19 You believe that God is one. You do

well; the demons also believe, and shudder. (NAS)

72.3. And (we believe) that He - exalted be the glory of our Lord! - hath taken neither wife nor son,

72.4. And that the foolish one among us used to speak concerning Allah an atrocious lie.

72.5. And lo! we had supposed that humankind and jinn would not speak a lie concerning Allah –

Psalm 83:18 that they may know that you alone, whose name is the LORD, are the Most High over all the earth.

Psalm 97:9 For you, O LORD, are most high over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.

Matthew 1:18, 20 18Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.

20But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

Luke 1:35 And the angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be borne will be called holy—the Son of God.

Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Refer to Psalm 33:9 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 18 (No. Q018) at ayat 6.

Christ was born through a miracle by the Holy Spirit. He was not conceived in the normal human way through a sexual union between a male and a female. God spoke the command and he came to be in the womb of his human mother (cf. SS 2 to 3 above).

72.6. And indeed (O Muhammad) individuals of humankind used to invoke the protection of individuals of the jinn, so that they increased them in revolt against Allah;

Deuteronomy 32:17 They sacrificed to demons that were no gods, to gods they had never known, to new gods that had come recently, whom your fathers had never dreaded.

Ecclesiastes 8:11 Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil.

Humans seek the protection of demons so they can carry on doing as they please in rebellion against the Most High God.

72.7. And indeed they supposed, even as ye suppose, that Allah would not raise anyone (from the dead) –

See Ezekiel 37:4-6 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 64 (No. Q064) at ayat 7 and John 5:28-29 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 21 (No. Q021) at ayat 47.

Job 19:25-26 "As for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, And at the last He will take His stand on the earth. 26"Even after my skin is destroyed, Yet from my flesh I shall see God; (NAS)

1Corinthians 15:21-23 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ.

72.8. And (the Jinn who had listened to the Qur'an said): We had sought the heaven but had found it filled with strong warders and meteors.

72.9. And we used to sit on places (high) therein to listen. But he who listeneth now findeth a flame in wait for him;

72.10. And we know not whether harm is boded unto all who are in the earth, or whether their Lord intendeth guidance for them.

72.11 And among us there are righteous folk and among us there are far from that. We are sects having different rules.

Luke 10:18 And he said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

Revelation 12:9, 12, 9And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

12Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

The rightly guided angels abide by the set of rules issued by God while the demons do as Satan does. The demons are consigned to the Second Resurrection as physical beings to undergo corrective training and education to lead them to repentance. If they refuse to repent they will face the second death and be no more.

72.12. And we know that we cannot escape from Allah in the earth, nor can we escape by flight.

Isaiah 28:18 Your covenant with death will be canceled, And your pact with Sheol will not stand; When the overwhelming scourge passes through, Then you become its trampling place. (NAS)

Romans 2:2-4 We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. 3Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? 4Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?

Proverbs 11:21 Be assured, an evil person will not go unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered.

1Peter 3:19-20 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.

2Peter 2:4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment;

Jude 1:6 And the angels who did not stay within their own position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, he has kept in eternal chains under gloomy darkness until the judgment of the great day.

Refer to Jeremiah 23:24 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 24 (No. Q024) at ayat 18.

Psalms 139 shows us that there is no escape from God. God fills the entire universe so there is nowhere to hide. The fallen angelic Host will be reduced to physical beings and will face corrective judgement during the Second Resurrection.

72.13. And when we heard the guidance, we believed therein, and whoso believeth in his Lord, he feareth neither loss nor oppression.

1Peter 3:13-14 Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is good? 14But even if you should suffer for righteousness’ sake, you will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled.

Isaiah 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.' (NAS)

Psalm 5:12 For you bless the righteous, O Lord; you cover him with favor as with a shield.

72.14. And there are among us some who have surrendered (to Allah) and there are among us some who are unjust. And whoso hath surrendered to Allah, such have taken the right path purposefully.

72.15. And as for those who are unjust, they are firewood for hell.

See Isaiah 8:20 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 49 (No. Q049) at ayat 6 and Matthew 25:41 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030) at ayat 16.

Isaiah 8:16 Bind thou up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples. (ERV)

Revelation 19:10 Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

Revelation 22:9 but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers the prophets, and with those who keep the words of this book. Worship God.”

72.16. If they (the idolaters) tread the right path, We shall give them to drink of water in abundance

72.17. That We may test them thereby, and whoso turneth away from the remembrance of his Lord; He will thrust him into ever-growing torment.

Deuteronomy 8:2 And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.

Leviticus 26:3-4 “If you walk in my statutes and observe my commandments and do them, 4then I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.

Revelation 22:17 The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let the one who hears say, “Come.” And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.

Obedience leads to blessings and disobedience ends with ruin –

Read also Deuteronomy chapter 28. It applies both on the physical and spiritual level.

72.18. And the places of worship are only for Allah, so pray not unto anyone along with Allah.

Refer to Luke 4:8 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 29 (No.Q029) at ayat 59.

Psalm 83:18 That they may know that You alone, whose name is the LORD, Are the Most High over all the earth. (NAS)

See also Revelation 22:9 at ayat 15 above.

72.19. And when the slave of Allah stood up in prayer to Him, they crowded on him, almost stifling.

72.20. Say (unto them, O Muhammad): I pray unto Allah only, and ascribe unto Him no partner.

Refer to 1Corinthians 8:5-6 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030) at ayat 28.

Joshua 24:14-15 “Now therefore fear the LORD and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. 15And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

72.21. Say: Lo! I control not hurt nor benefit for you.

72.22. Say: Lo! none can protect me from Allah, nor can I find any refuge beside Him

72.23. (Mine is) but conveyance (of the Truth) from Allah, and His messages; and whoso disobeyeth Allah and His messenger, lo! his is fire of hell, wherein such dwell for ever.

The messenger’s duty is plain conveyance of the message.

See also Surah 5.92 which states:

Obey Allah and obey the messenger, and beware! But if ye turn away, then know that the duty of Our messenger is only plain conveyance (of the message).

1Corinthians 9:16 For if I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of; for necessity is laid upon me; for woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel. (ASV)

Jeremiah 20:8-9 For each time I speak, I cry aloud; I proclaim violence and destruction, Because for me the word of the LORD has resulted In reproach and derision all day long. 9But if I say, "I will not remember Him Or speak anymore in His name," Then in my heart it becomes like a burning fire Shut up in my bones; And I am weary of holding it in, And I cannot endure it (NAS)

Psalm 118:8-9 It is better to take refuge in the LORD Than to trust in man. 9It is better to take refuge in the LORD Than to trust in princes. (NAS)

Proverbs 21:30 No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the LORD.

Refer to Revelation 20:11-15 as quoted in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 15 and John 5:28-29 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 21 (No. Q021) at ayat 47.

72.24. Till (the day) when they shall behold that which they are promised (they may doubt); but then they will know (for certain) who is weaker in allies and less in multitude.

Psalm 60:11-12 O give us help against the adversary, For deliverance by man is in vain. 12Through God we shall do valiantly, And it is He who will tread down our adversaries. (NAS)

2Chronicles 20:6 and said, “O LORD, God of our fathers, are you not God in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. In your hand are power and might, so that none is able to withstand you.

Revelation 7:12 saying, “Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever! Amen.”

72.25. Say (O Muhammad, unto the disbelievers): I know not whether that which ye are promised is nigh, or if my Lord hath set a distant term for it.

Matthew 24:36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.

1Thessalonians 5:2 For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.

2Peter 3:10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

72.26. (He is) the Knower of the Unseen, and He revealeth unto none His secret,

72.27. Save unto every messenger whom He hath chosen, and then He maketh a guard to go before him and a guard behind him

72.28. That He may know that they have indeed conveyed the messages of their Lord. He surroundeth all their doings, and He keepeth count of.

See Amos 3:7 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 64 (No. Q064) at ayat 12; Hebrews 4:13 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020) at ayat 7 and Daniel 2:22 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 33 (No. Q033) at ayat 55.

Psalm 139:5 You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me.

Psalm 125:2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people, from this time forth and forevermore.

So the Jinn control the nations but they will be brought to account and the elect shall take over from the First Resurrection for the 1000 years of the First Garden of Paradise and the 100 years of the Judgment of the Second Resurrection.

The number of the verses or ayats is 28 and refers to the inner council minus God and the Lamb.
