Commentary on the Koran: Surah 50 Qaf

Bible Quotes are from the English Standard Version unless otherwise noted.

Introduction

The text takes its name from the Arabic letter that stands alone at the head of the first verse.

It is asserted to belong to the middle group of Beccan Surahs.  It reinforces the Resurrection of the Dead and the failure of the Beccans to understand that they were not and are not going to heaven. That was their belief as Baal worshippers along with the pseudo-Christians who were also Baal worshippers.

50.1. Qaf. By the Glorious Qur'an,

Deuteronomy 10:17 For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who is not partial and takes no bribe.

1Timothy 6:15-16 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

Jeremiah 10:12 It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.

Refer to Job 42:2 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 59; 2Timothy 3:16 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020)  at ayat 6 and Psalm 147:5 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 33 (No. Q033) at ayat 2.

50.2. Nay, but they marvel that a warner of their own hath come unto them; and the disbelievers say: This is a strange thing:

Acts 3:22 Moses said, ‘The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet like me from your brothers. You shall listen to him in whatever he tells you.

This text refers to the Christ who then established the prophets and apostles of the Churches of God.

Matthew 13:57 And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.”

See 2Chronicles 36:15-16 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah10 (No. Q010) at ayat 39.

50.3. When we are dead and have become dust (shall we be brought back again)? That would be a far return!

The text refers to those who are dead and are buried in the earth and who are to rise from the dead as the Prophet warns them from Scripture.

Refer to Isaiah 26:19 and Ezekiel 37:4-6 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 52.

Daniel 12:2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.

50.4. We know that which the earth taketh of them, and with Us is a recording Book.

Those who are dead are in the Mind of God and their place in the Resurrection is assured.

Refer to Revelation 20:12 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 15 and to Ecclesiastes 12:7 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 19 (No. Q019) at ayat 40.

50.5. Nay, but they have denied the truth when it came unto them, therefor they are now in troubled case.

The failure to accept the warning of God and repent places them in the Second Resurrection which exposes them to the Second Death.

Romans 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

Romans 2:8 but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and fury.

2Thessalonians 2:12 in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

50.6. Have they not then observed the sky above them, how We have constructed it and beautified it, and how there are no rifts therein?

50.7. And the earth have We spread out, and have flung firm hills therein, and have caused of every lovely kind to grow thereon,

50.8. A vision and a reminder for every penitent slave.

Jeremiah 10:12 It is he who made the earth by his power, who established the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the heavens.

Job 38:4-7 “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. 5Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, 7when the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?

Genesis 1:12 The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

Refer to Romans 1:19-20 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 16 (No. Q016) at ayat 3.

The Holy Spirit opens the eyes of the elect to see the works of God from a whole new perspective when the elect turn to God. The Holy Spirit guides the elect into all understanding. The others have eyes but do not see and they have ears but do not understand. They just drift from day to day without pondering and reflecting upon all that surrounds them in their life.

50.9. And We send down from the sky blessed water whereby We give growth unto gardens and the grain of crops,

50.10. And lofty date-palms with ranged clusters,

50.11. Provision (made) for men; and therewith We quicken a dead land. Even so will be the resurrection of the dead.

Isaiah 55:10 For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater.

Isaiah 61:11 For as the earth brings forth its sprouts, and as a garden causes what is sown in it to sprout up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to sprout up before all the nations.

Romans 8:10-11 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

See
Daniel 12:2 at ayat 3 above.

God uses the water to bring the dead earth back to life and similarly will raise the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit. The text then refers to the tribes that were before them and who failed to pay attention to the warnings from Noah and the tribal group at Ar Rass and the tribe of Thamud and of A’ad warned by Hud (cf. the paper Al Hijr (Q015)). Also Pharaoh and the tribes of Lot (Moab an Ammon).  The dwellers in the wood are those of Midian as we have seen previously and the folk of Tubb’a were later heretics who were replaced.

50.12. The folk of Noah denied (the truth) before them, and (so did) the dwellers at Ar-Rass and (the tribe of) Thamud,

50.13. And (the tribe of) A'ad, and Pharaoh, and the brethren of Lot,

50.14. And the dwellers in the wood, and the folk of Tubb'a: every one denied their messengers, therefor My threat took effect.

50.15. Were We then worn out by the first creation? Yet they are in doubt about a new creation.

So God had no trouble with the first Creation yet they doubt the Resurrection and the recreation.

See 2Chronicles 36:16 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 10 (No. Q010) at ayat 39.

Nehemiah 9:26 Nevertheless, they were disobedient and rebelled against you and cast your law behind their back and killed your prophets, who had warned them in order to turn them back to you, and they committed great blasphemies.

The communities mentioned in the above ayats did not heed the warnings of God’s messengers sent to them. Their physical lives ended in ruin and destruction and they were consigned to the Second Resurrection so they can be reeducated and retrained to lead them to repentance. God gave them life the first time and will raise them back to life in the resurrection.

Isaiah 40:28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.

Isaiah 65:17 For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.

The physical creation will give way to a spiritual entity.

50.16. We verily created man and We know what his soul whispereth to him, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein.

50.17. When the two Receivers receive (him), seated on the right hand and on the left,

50.18. He uttereth no word but there is with him an observer ready.

This text refers to a concept of those on the right and the left of the Messiah portrayed in the Temple curtain decorations of the replacement Cherubim of Abraham and Moses on either side of the Palm tree that is the Messiah. The text would seem to imply that they have a charge in the Resurrection with the Messiah. The texts in Genesis and Exodus refers to them as El and Elohim.

Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?

Romans 8:7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.

Romans 6:16 Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

The record of all deeds will be presented to everyone and they will be silenced.

Refer to Revelation 20:12 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 15.

Isaiah 59:12 For our transgressions are multiplied before you, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us, and we know our iniquities:

50.19. And the agony of death cometh in truth. (And it is said unto him): This is that which thou wast wont to shun.

50.20. And the trumpet is blown. This is the threatened Day.

50.21. And every soul cometh, along with it a driver and a witness.

50.22. (And unto the evil-doer it is said): Thou wast in heedlessness of this. Now We have removed from thee thy covering, and piercing is thy sight this day.

Isaiah 25:7 And he will swallow up on this mountain the covering that is cast over all peoples, the veil that is spread over all nations.

Hebrews 9:27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment.

See Daniel 12:2 at ayat 3 above and refer to Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) for Revelation 20:12 at ayat 15; 2Corinthians 5:10 at ayat 36 and 2Corinthians 3:14 at ayat 72.

50.23. And (unto the evil-doer) his comrade saith: This is that which I have ready (as testimony).

50.24. (And it is said): Do ye twain hurl to hell each rebel ingrate,

Pickthall seems to be uncertain as to the identity of the two.  He thinks it may refer to the two in verse 21, i.e. the Driver and the witness, or the two of the cherubim on either side of the Messiah in Judgment (cf.  fn. 1 to S. 50 Qaf, p. 538). They are the false teachers of the demons set up to create the Binitarian and Trinitarian heresies in the faith as we see below.

50.25. Hinderer of good, transgressor, doubter,

50.26. Who setteth up another god along with Allah. Do ye twain hurl him to the dreadful doom.

50.27. His comrade saith: Our Lord! I did not cause him to rebel, but he was (himself) far gone in error.

50.28. He saith: Contend not in My presence, when I had already proffered unto you the warning.

50.29. The sentence that cometh from Me cannot be changed, and I am in no wise a tyrant unto the slaves.

50.30. On the day when We say unto hell: Art thou filled? and it saith: Can there be more to come?

The grave will take all that are sent to it, and yes there are many more to come.

See 2Chronicles 36:15-16 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 10 (No. Q010) at ayat 39.

See Jeremiah 7:25-26 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 44 (No. Q044) at ayat 6.

Matthew 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

God has sent His messengers throughout history and during the last days He will send the prophet of Dan-Ephraim of Jeremiah 4:15-16 and then His two Witnesses to preach that final warning message of Revelation 11:3ff. before He sends Messiah to subjugate mankind. Man chooses to ignore the warnings and reaps the consequences for his evil deeds.

1Corinthians 6:9-10 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Refer to Revelation 21:8 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 10.

50.31. And the Garden is brought nigh for those who kept from evil, no longer distant.

50.32. (And it is said): This is that which ye were promised. (It is) for every penitent and heedful one,

50.33. Who feareth the Beneficent in secret and cometh with a contrite heart.

50.34. Enter it in peace. This is the day of immortality.

50.35. There they have all that they desire, and there is more with Us.

Refer to Revelation 20:6 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 30 (No. Q030) at ayat 15.

Isaiah 57:15 For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.

Psalm 89:11 The heavens are yours; the earth also is yours; the world and all that is in it, you have founded them.

50.36. And how many a generation We destroyed before them, who were mightier than these in prowess so that they overran the lands! Had they any place of refuge (when the judgment came)?

50.37. Lo! therein verily is a reminder for him who hath a heart, or giveth ear with full intelligence.

The generations of old were warned by the messengers of God to turn from their evil ways to the correct worship of the One True God. Their might did not save them when the promised destruction visited them.

Only the elect reflect on these past events as God has opened their hearts and minds through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. The rest have fulfilled the following prophecy.

Isaiah 6:9-10 And he said, “Go, and say to this people: “‘Keep on hearing, but do not understand; keep on seeing, but do not perceive.’ 10Make the heart of this people dull, and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.”

50.38. And verily We created the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, in six Days, and naught of weariness touched Us.

Refer also to Surahs 22:47; 32: 5 and 70:4.

Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

Isaiah 40:28 Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.

God set us an example so we keep the Sabbath holy and cease from our daily activities.

50.39. Therefor (O Muhammad) bear with what they say, and hymn the praise of thy Lord before the rising and before the setting of the sun;

50.40. And in the night-time hymn His praise, and after the (prescribed) prostrations.

Refer to Commentary on the Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020) for 2Peter 3:9 at ayat 129; Psalm 119:164 and Psalm 55:17 at ayat 130.

50.41. And listen on the day when the crier crieth from a near place,

50.42. The day when they will hear the (Awful) Cry in truth. That is the day of coming forth (from the graves).

50.43. Lo! We it is Who quicken and give death, and unto Us is the journeying.

50.44. On the day when the earth splitteth asunder from them, hastening forth (they come). That is a gathering easy for Us (to make).

50.45. We are Best Aware of what they say, and thou (O Muhammad) art in no wise a compeller over them. But warn by the Qur'an him who feareth My threat.

Refer to 2Timothy 3:16-17 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 10 (No. Q010) at ayat 1; Ecclesiastes 12:7 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 19 (No. Q019) at ayat 40 and John 5:28-29 in Commentary on the Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020) at ayat 55.

Deuteronomy 32:39 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me; I kill and I make alive; I wound and I heal; and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.

1Samuel 2:6 The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up.

Psalm 139:4 Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether.

Philippians 2:12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,

So it is our task to warn by the Scriptures of the Resurrections of the Dead and the call of God.  We are to warn them and then their blood is on their own heads. The earth will be split and give forth its dead. For the First Resurrection it is to the joy of the reunion of the Servants of God and the Second is to the Judgment of the dead and the re-education of the entire planet.
