Commentary on the Koran: Surah 47 “Muhammad”
Pickthall Translation;
Bible Quotes are from the English Standard Version unless otherwise noted.
Introduction
The Surah allegedly
takes its name from the use of the term Muhammad
in verse 2 which is then asserted as the name of the prophet Qasim. It is in
fact a reference to the authority of the council of the church in the
Revelation of God and the name and seal of the 144,000 throughout the church as
the prophets of God (see Introduction to the Commentary on
the Koran (Q001)).
The Surah is held to
have been revealed in the period after the Hijrah and verse 18 is held to be
referring to the period when in the flight the Prophet looked back on Becca. However,
the “hour” that it refers to is the Hour of the destruction of the Last Days
under Messiah. The Hadithic traditions seek to make distinction between the
Koran and the Scriptures in prophetic references.

47.1.
Those who disbelieve and turn (men) from the way of Allah, He rendereth their
actions vain.
Job 5:12 He frustrates the devices of the crafty, so
that their hands achieve no success.
Proverbs 19:21 Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the
purpose of the LORD that will stand.
Proverbs 21:30 No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the
LORD.
47.2. And those who believe and do good works and believe in that
which is revealed unto Muhammad - and it is the truth from their Lord - He
riddeth them of their ill-deeds and improveth their state.
Psalm 32:2 Blessed is the man against whom the LORD counts no iniquity, and in
whose spirit there is no deceit.
Psalm 103:12 as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our
transgressions from us.
47.3. That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood and
because those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus Allah coineth
their similitudes for mankind.
See
also 2Corinthians 6:14-16 in
Commentary on the Koran: Surah 38
(No. Q038) at ayat 28.
Romans 8:5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
Galatians 5:17 For the desires of the flesh
are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh,
for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want
to do.
47.4. Now when ye meet in battle
those who disbelieve, then it is smiting of the necks until, when ye have
routed them, then making fast of bonds; and afterward either grace or ransom
till the war lay down its burdens. That (is the ordinance). And if Allah willed
He could have punished them (without you) but (thus it is ordained) that He may
try some of you by means of others. And those who are slain in the way of
Allah, He rendereth not their actions vain.
Joshua 8:1-2 And the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not fear and do not be dismayed.
Take all the fighting men with you, and arise, go up to Ai. See, I have given
into your hand the king of Ai, and his people, his city, and his land. 2And
you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king. Only its
spoil and its livestock you shall take as plunder for yourselves. Lay an ambush
against the city, behind it.”
1Samuel 15:3 Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they
have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and
sheep, camel and donkey.
Judges 2:21-22 I will no longer drive out
before them any of the nations that Joshua left when he died, 22in
order to test Israel by them, whether they will take care to walk in the way of
the LORD as their fathers did, or not.”
We carry out the instructions given to us. We strive to live at peace with all.
If the enemies, the unbelievers, do not allow us to live in peace and practice
our faith then we will go to war seeking His counsel. We will be tried and
tested by means of those around us. We must finish the race by following the example
of those of the faith before us.
2Corinthians 10:4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have
divine power to destroy strongholds.
Ephesians 6:11-12 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand
against the schemes of the devil. 12For we do not wrestle against
flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the
cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil
in the heavenly places.
Hebrews 6:10 For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love
that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do.
47.5. He will guide them and improve
their state,
47.6. And
bring them in unto the Garden which He hath made known to them.
Psalm 37:23 The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in
his way;
Proverbs 28:20 A faithful man will abound with blessings, but whoever hastens
to be rich will not go unpunished.

the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed.

47.8. And those who disbelieve, perdition is for them, and He will
make their actions vain.
47.9.
That is because they are averse to that which Allah hath revealed, therefor
maketh He their actions fruitless
Psalm 33:10 The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
Hebrews 10:26-27 For if we go on sinning deliberately after receiving
the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, 27but
a fearful expectation of judgment, and a fury of fire that will consume the
adversaries.
Refer to John
5:29 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020) at ayat 55.
47.10. Have they not travelled in
the land to see the nature of the consequence for those who were before them?
Allah wiped them out. And for the disbelievers there will be the like thereof.
47.11. That is because Allah is patron of those who believe, and because the
disbelievers have no patron.
Jude 1:7 Just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise
indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example
by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.
Exodus 15:4 Pharaoh’s chariots and his host he cast into the sea, and his
chosen officers were sunk in the Red Sea.
Hebrews 3:17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with
those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?
Proverbs 11:21 Be assured, an evil person will
not go unpunished, but the offspring of the righteous will be delivered.
Psalm 4:3 But know that the LORD has set apart the godly for himself; the LORD
hears when I call to him.
Those who persist in
doing evil will surely be punished like the wicked generations of old.
47.12. Lo! Allah will cause those who believe and do good works to
enter Gardens underneath which rivers flow; while those who disbelieve take
their comfort in this life and eat even as the cattle eat, and the Fire is
their habitation.
Refer to Revelation
20:6 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 11 (Q011) at ayat 108.
Ecclesiastes 8:15 And I commend joy, for man has
nothing better under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will
go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under
the sun.
See Romans 8:5 at ayat 3 above and also Matthew 25:41 in Commentary on
the Koran: Surah 34 (No. Q034) at ayat 5.

stronger than thy township (O Muhammad) which hath cast thee out, have We
destroyed, and they had no helper!
See Proverbs 21:30 at ayat 1 above.
Jeremiah 32:27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh. Is anything too
hard for me?
Jeremiah 9:23 Thus says the LORD: “Let not the wise man
boast in his wisdom, let not the mighty man boast in his might, let not the
rich man boast in his riches,
Nothing will save the evildoers when their day of calamity comes to punish them
for their lawlessness.
47.14. Is he who relieth on a clear proof from his Lord like those for whom
the evil that they do is beautified while they follow their own lusts?
See
2Corinthians 6:14-16 in
Commentary on the Koran:
Surah 38 (No. Q038) at ayat 28 and also refer to Acts 26:18 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 35 (No. Q035) at ayat 22.
47.15. A
similitude of the Garden which those who keep their duty (to Allah) are
promised: Therein are rivers of water unpolluted, and rivers of milk whereof
the flavour changeth not, and rivers of wine delicious to the drinkers, and
rivers of clear- run honey; therein for them is every kind of fruit, with
pardon from their Lord. (Are those who enjoy all this) like those who are
immortal in the Fire and are given boiling water to drink so that it teareth
their bowels?
This contrasts the First Garden of Paradise and the fruits of Paradise for the
elect and end result of the death of the unrepentant guilty in the lake of
fire.
Note that after the
flood Noah planted a vineyard (Gen. 9:20). Here in this text regarding the
First Resurrection at the return of the Messiah and the Resurrection of the
elect God established again vineyards of wine for the elect over the millennial
system to the Second Resurrection of the Dead. This is a physical system under
the Messiah for a thousand years (Rev. 20:1-3). The assertion that the Koran
does not support the drinking of wine is a lie. Unless they elect drink the
Blood and eat the Flesh of the Messiah at the Lord’s Supper they have no part
in him or the First Resurrection or the Kingdom of God (Jn. 6:53-56).
Refer to Revelation
20:6 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 11 (No. Q011) at ayat 108 and Revelation 20:14-15 in Commentary
on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at ayat 15.
47.16. Among them are some who give
ear unto thee (Muhammad) till, when they go forth from thy presence they say
unto those who have been given knowledge: What was that he said just now? Those
are they whose hearts Allah hath sealed, and they follow their own lusts.

says: “You will indeed hear but never understand, and you will indeed see but
never perceive.”
Ezekiel 12:2 Son of man, you dwell in the midst of a rebellious house, who have
eyes to see, but see not, who have ears to hear, but hear not, for they are a
rebellious house.
47.17. While as for those who walk
aright, He addeth to their guidance, and giveth them their protection (against
evil).
See also Psalm 37:23 at ayat 6 above.
Psalm 90:17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the
work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!
Psalm 31:23 Love the LORD, all you his saints! The LORD preserves the faithful
but abundantly repays the one who acts in pride.

unawares? And the beginnings thereof have already come. But how, when it hath
come upon them, can they take their warning?

angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.
1Thessalonians 5:2-3 For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the
Lord will come like a thief in the night. 3While people are saying,
“There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them as
labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.
47.19. So know (O Muhammad) that there is no God save Allah, and ask
forgiveness for thy sin and for believing men and believing women. Allah
knoweth (both) your place of turmoil and your place of rest.

equip you, though you do not know me,

you rest.

will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right
hand.
47.20. And those who believe say: If only a surah were revealed! But
when a decisive surah is revealed and war is mentioned therein, thou seest
those in whose hearts is a disease looking at thee with the look of men
fainting unto death. Therefor woe unto them!

than sacrifice.

is none who does good, not even one.

does good, not even one.

blind their eyes.

their heart, lest they see with their eyes, and understand with their heart,
and turn, and I would heal them.”

written, “God gave them a spirit of stupor, eyes that would not see and ears that
would not hear, down to this very day.”

hearts?
Psalm 10:4 In the pride of his face the wicked does not seek him; all his
thoughts are, “There is no God.”
Psalm 14:1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt,

47.25. Lo! those who turn back after
the guidance hath been manifested unto them, Satan hath seduced them, and He
giveth them the rein.

Hebrews 6:4-6 For it is impossible, in the case of those who have once been
enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5and have tasted the
goodness of the word of God and the powers of the age to come, 6and then have fallen away, to restore them again to repentance,
since they are crucifying once again the Son of God to their own harm and
holding him up to contempt.

Jeremiah 17:10 in Commentary on the
Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017) at
ayat 1.

when the angels gather them, smiting their faces and their backs!

are shaken and pass away, and the mighty are taken away by no human hand.

12:7 in Commentary
on the Koran: Surah 19 (No. Q019) at ayat 40.
47.28. That
will be because they followed that which angereth Allah, and hated that which
pleaseth Him. Therefor He hath made their actions vain.
47.29. Or do those in whose hearts is a disease deem that
Allah will not bring to light their (secret) hates?
47.30. And if We would, We could show them unto thee
(Muhammad) so that thou shouldst know them surely by their marks. And thou
shalt know them by the burden of their talk. And Allah knoweth your deeds.

till We know those of you who strive hard (for the cause of Allah) and the
steadfast, and till We test your record.

that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and
glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
James 1:3-4 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.
4And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect

suffering produces endurance, 4and endurance produces character, and

he has committed, for them he shall die.

sport and a pastime. And if ye believe and ward off (evil). He will give you
your wages, and will not ask of you your wordly wealth.

some who hoard. And as for him who hoardeth, he hoardeth only from his soul.

Romans 11:17-20 But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, although
a wild olive shoot, were grafted in among the others and now share in the
nourishing root of the olive tree, 18do not be arrogant toward the
branches. If you are, remember it is not you who support the root, but the root
that supports you. 19Then you will say, “Branches were broken off so
that I might be grafted in.” 20That is true. They were broken off
because of their unbelief, but you stand fast through faith. So do not become
proud, but fear.
The responsibility rests with the church for the conduct of
the faith and those who sin are sent to the adversary so that their lives may
be saved at the Last Day in the Resurrection of the Dead (1Cor. 5:5) and the
retraining of all mankind. The council of the church is able to determine and
to correct the elect in judgment now.
