Commentary on the Koran: Surah 42 “Consultation”

Pickthall Translation, English Standard Version quotes unless otherwise noted.

Introduction

This text is the third of the Ha Mim series. “Counsel” or “Consultation” takes its name from a word in verse 38. It belongs to the Middle Group of Beccan Surahs. As stated it is directed at the Qureysh as the centre of the Arabs at Becca and is a specific warning to them and the Arabs generally.

The warning has so far not been heeded except in the very short term.

42.3. Thus Allah the Mighty, the Knower inspireth thee (Muhammad) as (He inspired) those before thee.

42.4. Unto Him belongeth all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, and He is the Sublime, the Tremendous.

42.5. Almost might the heavens above be rent asunder while the angels hymn the praise of their Lord and ask forgiveness for those on the earth. Lo! Allah, He is the Forgiver, the Merciful.

We now move into the question of protection from those other than Eloah and the fact that it is only by prayer to Allah that safety is granted and there can be prayer to and protection from no other being including the Messiah himself unless it is granted by direction of Eloah. This reinforces the position of the elohim before the throne of God that supervise the prayers of the saints.

42.6. And as for those who choose protecting friends beside Him, Allah is Warden over them, and thou art in no wise a guardian over them.

Isaiah 59:16
He saw that there was no one, and was appalled that there was no one to intervene; so his own arm brought him victory, and his righteous acts upheld him.

Isaiah 63:5 I looked, but there was no helper, I was appalled that there was no one to give support; so my own arm brought me victory, and as for my wrath, it supported me.

James 2:19 You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder!

Here the direction is to Becca as the capital of the Arabs under the Qureysh and the surrounding towns and cities.

42.7. And thus We have inspired in thee a Lecture in Arabic, that thou mayst warn the mother-town and those around it, and mayst warn of a day of assembling whereof there is no doubt. A host will be in the Garden, and a host of them in the Flame.

Hebrews 9:27
And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,

42.8. Had Allah willed, He could have made them one community, but Allah bringeth whom He will into His mercy. And the wrong-doers have no friend nor helper.

42.9. Or have they chosen protecting friends besides Him? But Allah, He (alone) is the Protecting Friend. He quickeneth the dead, and He is Able to do all things.

See Isaiah 63:5 at ayat 42.6 above.

Romans 9:15
For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.

As we now see, there is only one Religion and faith in the worship of the One True God and that faith was given to Noah and the patriarchs and prophets from Abraham and Moses and the Children of Israel to the Churches of God under Messiah and the apostles. The Muhammad or council of the Church of God at Becca under Qasim was only one of the branches of the early divisions of the church in the Smyrna and Pergamos eras of the Church of God.

42.13. He hath ordained for you that religion which He commended unto Noah, and that which We inspire in thee (Muhammad), and that which We commended unto Abraham and Moses and Jesus, saying: Establish the religion, and be not divided therein. Dreadful for the idolaters is that unto which thou callest them. Allah chooseth for Himself whom He will, and guideth unto Himself him who turneth (toward Him).

2Corinthians 5:1 For
we know that if the tent that is our earthly home is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

Hebrews 9:11 But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this creation)

Philippians 3:20-21 But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

1Corinthians 3:16 Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?

Hebrews 11:13 These
all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.

Hebrews 11:16
But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.

Hebrews 11:39-40 And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, 40since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

Jude 1:3
Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.

Ephesians 4:4-6 There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

John 6:44
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.

John 14:6 Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

42.14. And they were not divided until after the knowledge came unto them, through rivalry among themselves; and had it not been for a Word that had already gone forth from thy Lord for an appointed term, it surely had been judged between them. And those who were made to inherit the Scripture after them are verily in hopeless doubt concerning it.

Here we see the divisions caused by the Binitarians and Trinitarians was the author of confusion of the faith and indeed they are in hopeless doubt concerning the Scriptures.

1Corinthians 11:19
for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized.

Ecclesiastes 3:17 I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked, for there is a time for every matter and for every work.

Refer to Habakkuk 2:3 at ayat 18.82 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 18 (No. Q018) and John 5:28-29 at ayat 20.55 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020).

The righteous of the faith will attain the First Resurrection, the rest will go into the Second Resurrection.

42.15. Unto this, then, summon (O Muhammad). And be thou upright as thou art commanded, and follow not their lusts, but say: I believe in whatever scripture Allah hath sent down, and I am commanded to be just among you. Allah is our Lord and your Lord. Unto us our works and unto you your works; no argument between us and you. Allah will bring us together, and unto Him is the journeying.

Refer to 2Timothy 3:16; Deuteronomy 29:29 and 2Peter 1:20-21  at ayat 20.6 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020).

1Corinthians 15:28 When all things are subjected to him, then the Son himself will also be subjected to him who put all things in subjection under him, that God may be all in all.

42.16. And those who argue concerning Allah after He hath been acknowledged, their argument hath no weight with their Lord, and wrath is upon them and theirs will be an awful doom.

However there will always be differences of opinion among the faith for the churches will never be unanimous in error save by persecution of the leaders and by brainwashing of the faithful.

2Peter 2:21
For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them.

Psalm 125:5 But those who turn aside to their crooked ways the LORD will lead away with evildoers! Peace be upon Israel!

Matthew 25:41 Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

42.17. Allah it is Who hath revealed the Scripture with truth, and the Balance. How canst thou know? It may be that the Hour is nigh.

42.18. Those who believe not therein seek to hasten it, while those who believe are fearful of it and know that it is the Truth. Are not they who dispute, in doubt concerning the Hour, far astray?

Refer to 2Peter 3:9 at ayat 19.80 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 19 (No. Q019),  2Timothy 3:16 at ayat 20.6 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 20 (No. Q020) and Psalm 119:160 at ayat 33.40  Commentary on the Koran: Surah 33 (No. Q033).

John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

Mark 13:32
But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.

Hebrews 10:31  It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

James 3:13-15 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

42.19. Allah is gracious unto His slaves. He provideth for whom He will. And He is the Strong, the Mighty.

Psalm 103:8
The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.

42.20. Whoso desireth the harvest of the Hereafter, We give him increase in its harvest. And whoso desireth the harvest of the world, We give him thereof, and he hath no portion in the Hereafter.

See Galatians 6:8 at ayat 39.48 in Surah 39.

Mark 8:35  For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it.

42.21. Or have they partners (of Allah) who have made lawful for them in religion that which Allah allowed not? And but for a decisive word (gone forth already), it would have been judged between them. Lo! for wrong-doers is a painful doom.

The Sabbath is tied to the Covenant and all Sabbaths must be kept. Those who do not keep the Seventh Day as the Sabbath will not inherit the Kingdom of God and will go to the Second Resurrection; all of them.

Romans 1:32
Though they know God's righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.

2Thessalonians 2:11-12
Therefore God sends them a strong delusion, so that they may believe what is false, 12in order that all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

Refer to Revelation 20:11-15 at ayat 17.15  Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017).

42.22. Thou seest the wrong-doers fearful of that which they have earned, and it will surely befall them, while those who believe and do good works (will be) in flowering meadows of the Gardens, having what they wish from their Lord. This is the great preferment.

Faith without works is dead as the apostle James tells us (Jas. 2:17). The elect of the saints are those who keep the commandments of God and the faith and testimony of Christ (Rev. 12:17; 14:12).

Proverbs 1:27
when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you.

Proverbs 10:24
What the wicked dreads will come upon him, but the desire of the righteous will be granted.

Daniel 7:27
And the kingdom and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; his kingdom shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.'

Refer to Revelation 20:6 at ayat 18.31 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 18 (No. Q018).

42.23. This it is which Allah announceth unto His bondmen who believe and do good works. Say (O Muhammad, unto mankind): I ask of you no fee therefor, save lovingkindness among kinsfolk. And whoso scoreth a good deed We add unto its good for him. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Responsive.

Here we see the emphasis again on the book of James of the Scriptures and the testimony of Christ in the Gospels and of the apostles.

Acts 20:33
I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel.

John 13:34
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.

Acts 20:35 In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.'

Psalm 86:5
For you, O Lord, are good and forgiving, abounding in steadfast love to all who call upon you.

Matthew 10:42 And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.

42.24. Or say they: He hath invented a lie concerning Allah? If Allah willed, He could have sealed thy heart (against them). And Allah will wipe out the lie and will vindicate the truth by His words. Lo! He is Aware of what is hidden in the breasts (of men).

Proverbs 12:19
Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue is but for a moment.

Proverbs 12:22 Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, but those who act faithfully are his delight.

Proverbs 19:9 A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who breathes out lies will perish.

Psalm 5:6
You destroy those who speak lies; the LORD abhors the bloodthirsty and deceitful man.

Psalm 52:4-5
You love all words that devour, O deceitful tongue. 5But God will break you down forever; he will snatch and tear you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. Selah.

Psalm 44:21 would not God discover this? For he knows the secrets of the heart.

Refer to Jeremiah 17:10 at ayat 17.1 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017).

42.25. And He it is Who accepteth repentance from His bondmen, and pardoneth the evil deeds, and knoweth what ye do,

Acts 3:19
Therefore, repent, and convert, for the blotting out of your sins, so that times of refreshing may come from the face of the Lord, (LITV)

Micah 7:18 Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love.

Refer to Jeremiah 17:10 at ayat 17.1 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 17 (No. Q017).

So again we are reminded of the requirement of good works as reinforced in the Gospels and by James and the apostles.

42.26. And accepteth those who do good works, and giveth increase unto them of His bounty. And as for disbelievers, theirs will be an awful doom.

Psalms 19:14
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.

Isaiah 13:11 I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant, and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless.

42.27. And if Allah were to enlarge the provision for His slaves they would surely rebel in the earth, but He sendeth down by measure as He willeth. Lo! He is Informed, a Seer of His bondmen.

We are supplied as God sees fit and are not given over indulgence.

See Psalm 44:21 at ayat 42.24 above.

2Corinthians 9:8
And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.

1Kings 8:39 then hear in heaven your dwelling place and forgive and act and render to each whose heart you know, according to all his ways (for you, you only, know the hearts of all the children of mankind),

Proverbs 30:8-9 Remove far from me falsehood and lying; give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with the food that is needful for me, 9lest I be full and deny you and say, “Who is the LORD?” or lest I be poor and steal and profane the name of my God.

42.28. And He it is Who sendeth down the saving rain after they have despaired, and spreadeth out His mercy. He is the Protecting Friend, the Praiseworthy.

Jeremiah 14:3-4 Her nobles send their servants for water; they come to the cisterns; they find no water; they return with their vessels empty; they are ashamed and confounded and cover their heads. 4Because of the ground that is dismayed, since there is no rain on the land, the farmers are ashamed; they cover their heads.

Jeremiah 14:22 Are there any among the false gods of the nations that can bring rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Are you not he, O LORD our God? We set our hope on you, for you do all these things.

Psalm 18:3 I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am saved from my enemies.

Psalm 106:1 Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the LORD, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.

42.29. And of His portents is the creation of the heaven and the earth, and of whatever beasts He hath dispersed therein. And He is Able to gather them when He will.

Nehemiah 9:6
You are the LORD, you alone. You have made heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them; and you preserve all of them; and the host of heaven worships you.

Genesis 7:21-22 And all flesh died that moved on the earth, birds, livestock, beasts, all swarming creatures that swarm on the earth, and all mankind. 22Everything on the dry land in whose nostrils was the breath of life died.

Job 34:14-15 If he should set his heart to it and gather to himself his spirit and his breath, 15all flesh would perish together, and man would return to dust.

42.30. Whatever of misfortune striketh you, it is what your right hands have earned. And He forgiveth much.

See Psalm 86:5 at ayat 42.23 above and Galatians 6:7-8 at ayat 39.48 in Surah 39.

All mankind is under the supervision of Eloah and he has determined when each is to be called and then when called then justified and glorified (Rom. 8:29-30).

42.31. Ye cannot escape in the earth, for beside Allah ye have no protecting friend nor any helper.

Psalm 139:5-7
You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. 6Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it. 7Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence?

7The LORD will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. 8The LORD will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.

42.32. And of His portents are the ships, like banners on the sea;

42.33. If He will He calmeth the wind so that they keep still upon its surface - Lo! herein verily are signs for every steadfast grateful (heart).

Psalm 107:23-32
Some went down to the sea in ships, doing business on the great waters; 24they saw the deeds of the LORD, his wondrous works in the deep. 25For he commanded and raised the stormy wind, which lifted up the waves of the sea. 26They mounted up to heaven; they went down to the depths; their courage melted away in their evil plight; 27they reeled and staggered like drunken men and were at their wits' end. 28Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress. 29He made the storm be still, and the waves of the sea were hushed. 30Then they were glad that the waters were quiet, and he brought them to their desired haven. 31Let them thank the LORD for his steadfast love, for his wondrous works to the children of man! 32Let them extol him in the congregation of the people, and praise him in the assembly of the elders.

42.34. Or He causeth them to perish on account of that which they have earned - And He forgiveth much –

See Daniel 9:9 at ayat 42.5 above.

42.36. Now whatever ye have been given is but a passing comfort for the life of the world, and that which Allah hath is better and more lasting for those who believe and put their trust in their Lord,

See 2 Corinthians 5:1 at ayat 42.13 above.

2Corinthians 4:18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Refer also to 1John 2:16-17 at ayat 18.8 Commentary on the Koran: Surah 18 (No. Q018).

42.37. And those who shun the worst of sins and indecencies and, when they are wroth, forgive,

42.38. And those who answer the call of their Lord and establish worship, and whose affairs are a matter of counsel, and who spend of what We have bestowed on them,

42.39. And those who, when great wrong is done to them, defend themselves,

1Timothy 6:11
But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness.
