Commentary on the Koran: Surah 7: “The Heights”

Pickthall’s translation and RSV unless otherwise noted.

Introduction

Surah 7 takes its name from words in verse 46 “And on the Heights are men who know them all by their marks.” This text often is used to term the Surah as “Purgatory” (e.g. Rashad Khalifa) as the general theme is that of those who oppose the will of God from Satan on down through the ages and of Divine Guidance. They are thus removed from the First Resurrection and sent to the Second Resurrection at the end of the Millennium. Hence the Trinitarian pseudo-Christian concept of Purgatory in being in a position of waiting for judgment is introduced.

Pickthall considers that the best authorities all assign the text to be from the same period as Surah 6, which is the Prophet’s last year in Becca. Although he says that some consider that verses 163-167 may have been revealed at Al-Madinah.

***************

7.1. Alif. Lam. Mim. Sad.

7.2. (It is) a Scripture that is revealed unto thee (Muhammad) - so let there be no heaviness in thy heart therefrom - that thou mayst warn thereby, and (it is) a Reminder unto believers.

7.3. (Saying): Follow that which is sent down unto you from your Lord, and follow no protecting friends beside Him. Little do ye recollect!

7.4. How many a township have We destroyed! As a raid by night, or while they slept at noon, Our terror came unto them.

7.5. No plea had they, when Our terror came unto them, save that they said: Lo! We were wrong-doers.

2Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. (ESV)

John 17:17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. (ESV)

Psalm 103:19 The LORD has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all. (ESV)

1John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

1John 2:3 And by this we may be sure that we know him, if we keep his commandments.

Psalm 25:4-5 Make me to know thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.  5Lead me in thy truth, and teach me, for thou art the God of my salvation; for thee I wait all the day long.

Proverbs 11:14 Where there is no guidance, a people falls; but in an abundance of counselors there is safety.

Psalm 91:5-6 You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.

God knows all things. The outcome of all possible events is in His hands. Adversity may come any time to the wicked for they are doomed to destruction but the rightly guided have been promised protection by their Lord.

7.6. Then verily We shall question those unto whom (Our message) hath been sent, and verily We shall question the messengers.

7.7. Then verily We shall narrate unto them (the event) with knowledge, for We were not absent (when it came to pass).

7.8. The weighing on that day is the true (weighing). As for those whose scale is heavy, they are the successful.

7.9. And as for those whose scale is light: those are they who lose their souls because they used to wrong Our revelations.

7.10. And We have given you (mankind) power in the earth, and appointed for you therein livelihoods. Little give ye thanks!

Romans 14:12 So each of us shall give account of himself to God.

Hebrews 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to them; for they are keeping watch over your souls, as men who will have to give account. Let them do this joyfully, and not sadly, for that would be of no advantage to you.

Romans 2:7 to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life;

Matthew 25:46 And they will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."

Genesis 9:3-4 Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you; and as I gave you the green plants, I give you everything. 4Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.

Genesis 1:26 Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth."

7.11. And We created you, then fashioned you, then told the angels: Fall ye prostrate before Adam! And they fell prostrate, all save Iblis, who was not of those who make prostration.

7.12. He said: What hindered thee that thou didst not fall prostrate when I bade thee? (Iblis) said: I am better than him. Thou createdst me of fire while him Thou didst create of mud.

Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

The angels were told to teach and guide the human species but the fallen Host under Satan did not want to do so. They feared that these species made out of the earth would take on their power and authority in the future as they were told that may be the case by Satan. The entire heavenly Host had to proceed by faith as they would be revealed the plan of God through mankind and the prophets. The fallen Host lacked faith.

7.13. He said: Then go down hence! It is not for thee to show pride here, so go forth! Lo! thou art of those degraded.

Satan fell from God's grace and was expelled from heaven. His pride led to his fall.

Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

See also Isaiah chapter 14 and Ezekiel chapter 28.

7.14. He said: Reprieve me till the day when they are raised (from the dead).

7.15. He said: Lo! thou art of those reprieved.

Satan asked that his punishment be delayed until mankind is raised from the dead in the Second or General Resurrection. God allowed him that request.

7.16. He said: Now, because Thou hast sent me astray, verily I shall lurk in ambush for them on Thy Right Path.

7.17. Then I shall come upon them from before them and from behind them and from their right hands and from their left hands, and Thou wilt not find most of them beholden (unto Thee).

Because Satan was being sent astray for his disobedience he was going to ambush mankind and lead them away from the right path.

1Peter 5:8 Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour.

2Corinthians 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, disguising themselves as apostles of Christ. 14And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light. 15So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds. (ESV)

Ecclesiastes 7:20 Surely there is not a righteous man on earth who does good and never sins.

Romans 3:23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

Ephesians 2:2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience.

Revelation 12:9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world--he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him.

7.18. He said: Go forth from hence, degraded, banished. As for such of them as follow thee, surely I will fill hell with all of you.

Satan was banished from God's presence. Satan and all those who follow in his ways were to be consigned to the Second Resurrection.

7.19. And (unto man): O Adam! Dwell thou and thy wife in the Garden and eat from whence ye will, but come not nigh this tree lest ye become wrong-doers.

Genesis 2:15-17 The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. 16And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "You may freely eat of every tree of the garden;  17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die."

7.20. Then Satan whispered to them that he might manifest unto them that which was hidden from them of their shame, and he said: Your Lord forbade you from this tree only lest ye should become angels or become of the immortals.

Genesis 3:4-5 But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die. 5For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil."

Revelation 19:10 Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. (ESV)

Man is destined to be equal to the angels in the Resurrection and become elohim (Ps. 82:6; Zech. 12:8; Jn. 10:34-36).

7.21. And he swore unto them (saying): Lo! I am a sincere adviser unto you.

7.22. Thus did he lead them on with guile. And when they tasted of the tree their shame was manifest to them and they began to hide (by heaping) on themselves some of the leaves of the Garden. And their Lord called them, (saying): Did I not forbid you from that tree and tell you: Lo! Satan is an open enemy to you?

7.23. They said: Our Lord! We have wronged ourselves. If thou forgive us not and have not mercy on us, surely we are of the lost!

Genesis 3:6-13 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate. 7Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.  8And they heard the sound of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God among the trees of the garden. 9But the LORD God called to the man, and said to him, "Where are you?" 10And he said, "I heard the sound of thee in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself." 11He said, "Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten of the tree of which I commanded you not to eat?" 12The man said, "The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate." 13Then the LORD God said to the woman, "What is this that you have done?" The woman said, "The serpent beguiled me, and I ate."

Psalm 130:3-4 If you, O LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand? 4But with you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. (ESV)

Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (ESV)

1Peter 5:8 Be sober, be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking some one to devour.

7.24. He said: Go down (from hence), one of you a foe unto the other. There will be for you on earth a habitation and provision for a while.

7.25. He said: There shall ye live, and there shall ye die, and thence shall ye be brought forth.

Genesis 3:14-19 The LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed are you above all cattle, and above all wild animals; upon your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your life. 15I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel." 16To the woman he said, "I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you." 17And to Adam he said, "Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the ground because of you; in toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life; 18thorns and thistles it shall bring forth to you; and you shall eat the plants of the field. 19In the sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; you are dust, and to dust you shall return."

7.26. O Children of Adam! We have revealed unto you raiment to conceal your shame, and splendid vesture, but the raiment of restraint from evil, that is best. This is of the revelations of Allah, that they may remember.

Genesis 3:21  And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins, and clothed them.

Psalm 34:14 Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it. (NAS)

1Thessalonians 5:21-22 but test everything; hold fast what is good, 22abstain from every form of evil.

7.27. O Children of Adam! Let not Satan seduce you as he caused your (first) parents to go forth from the Garden and tore off from them their robe (of innocence) that he might manifest their shame to them. Lo! he seeth you, he and his tribe, from whence ye see him not. Lo! We have made the devils protecting friends for those who believe not.

Mark 7:7-9 Their worship of me is worthless, because they teach human rules as doctrines.' 8You abandon the commandment of God and hold to human tradition." 9Then he told them, "You have such a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to keep your own tradition! (ISV)

Job 1:21 And he said, "Naked I came from my mother's womb, and naked shall I return; the LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD."

7.30. A party hath He led aright, while error hath just hold over (another) party, for lo! they choose the devils for protecting supporters instead of Allah and deem that they are rightly guided.

7.33. Say: My Lord forbiddeth only indecencies, such of them as are apparent and such as are within, and sin and wrongful oppression, and that ye associate with Allah that for which no warrant hath been revealed, and that ye tell concerning Allah that which ye know not.

1Corinthians 6:9-10 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither the immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor sexual perverts, 10nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, 21envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. (ESV)

7.34. And every nation hath its term, and when its term cometh, they cannot put it off an hour nor yet advance (it).

Daniel 4:17, 35 17This matter is by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.

All things will be accomplished according to His purpose and timing.

7.35. O Children of Adam! When messengers of your own come unto you who narrate unto you My revelations, then whosoever refraineth from evil and amendeth - there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve.

7.36. But they who deny Our revelations and scorn them - each are rightful owners of the Fire; they will abide therein.

7.37. Who doeth greater wrong than he who inventeth a lie concerning Allah or denieth Our tokens. (For such) their appointed portion of the Book (of destiny) reacheth them till, when Our messengers come to gather them, they say: Where (now) is that to which ye cried beside Allah? They say: They have departed from us. And they testify against themselves that they were disbelievers.

7.38. He saith: Enter into the Fire among nations of the jinn and humankind who passed away before you. Every time a nation entereth, it curseth its sister (nation) till, when they have all been made to follow one another thither, the last of them saith unto the first of them: Our Lord! These led us astray, so give them double torment of the Fire. He saith: For each one there is double (torment), but ye know not.

7.39. And the first of them saith unto the last of them: Ye were no whit better than us, so taste the doom for what ye used to earn.

7.40. Lo! they who deny Our revelations and scorn them, for them the gates of heaven will not be opened nor will they enter the Garden until the camel goeth through the needle's eye. Thus do We requite the guilty.

7.41. Theirs will be a bed of hell, and over them coverings (of hell). Thus do We requite wrong-doers.

Matthew 19:24 Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

Their leaders, their princes, priests and prophets are all corrupt. They lead the people astray. They refused to pay heed to the messengers that were sent to them by God. They and those they have deceived will bear their punishment.

7.42. But (as for) those who believe and do good works - We tax not any soul beyond its scope - Such are rightful owners of the Garden. They abide therein.

7.43. And We remove whatever rancour may be in their hearts. Rivers flow beneath them. And they say: The praise to Allah, Who hath guided us to this. We could not truly have been led aright if Allah had not guided us. Verily the messengers of our Lord did bring the Truth. And it is cried unto them: This is the Garden. Ye inherit it for what ye used to do.

7.44. And the dwellers of the Garden cry unto the dwellers of the Fire: We have found that which our Lord promised us (to be) the Truth. Have ye (too) found that which your Lord promised the Truth? They say: Yea, verily. And a crier in between them crieth: The curse of Allah is on evil-doers,

7.45. Who debar (men) from the path of Allah and would have it crooked, and who are disbelievers in the Last Day.

7.46. Between them is a veil. And on the Heights are men who know them all by their Marks. And they call unto the dwellers of the Garden: Peace be unto you! They enter it not although they hope (to enter).

7.47. And when their eyes are turned toward the dwellers of the Fire, they say: Our Lord! Place us not with the wrong-doing folk.

7.48. And the dwellers on the Heights call unto men whom they know by their Marks, (saying): What did your multitude and that in which ye took your pride avail you?

7.49. Are these they of whom ye swore that Allah would not show them mercy? (Unto them it hath been said): Enter the Garden. No fear shall come upon you nor is it ye who will grieve.

7.50. And the dwellers of the Fire cry out unto the dwellers of the Garden: Pour on us some water or some wherewith Allah hath provided you. They say: Lo! Allah hath forbidden both to disbelievers (in His guidance),

7.51. Who took their religion for a sport and pastime, and whom the life of the world beguiled. So this day We have forgotten them even as they forgot the meeting of this their Day and as they used to deny Our tokens.

7.52. Verily We have brought them a Scripture which We expounded with knowledge, a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe.

7.53. Await they aught save the fulfilment thereof? On the day when the fulfilment thereof cometh, those who were before forgetful thereof will say: The messengers of our Lord did bring the Truth! Have we any intercessors, that they may intercede for us? Or can we be returned (to life on earth), that we may act otherwise than we used to act? They have lost their souls, and that which they devised hath failed them.

1Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your strength, but with the temptation will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

Colossians 1:12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in light.

The elect have been called out of darkness, they have followed the Light that came into the world. They inherit the First Garden, the First Resurrection and eternal life, and they will reign with Christ for a thousand years. The souls referred to here are the Nephesh that return to God. There is no eternal soul as taught by the demons.

The rest that have been deceived by the ways of this world and its leaders and fall into the corrupt systems will go into the Second Resurrection to face the intensive corrective training. If they choose not to repent will be no more after undergoing the Second Death.

Matthew 7:13-14 Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. (ESV)

Ephesians 2:12 remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

7.54. Lo! your Lord is Allah Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days, then mounted He the Throne. He covereth the night with the day, which is in haste to follow it, and hath made the sun and the moon and the stars subservient by His command. His verily is all creation and commandment. Blessed be Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!

7.55. (O mankind!) Call upon your Lord humbly and in secret. Lo! He loveth not aggressors.

7.56. Work not confusion in the earth after the fair ordering (thereof). and call on Him in fear and hope. Lo! the mercy of Allah is nigh unto the good.

7.57. And He it is Who sendeth the winds as tidings heralding His mercy, till, when they bear a cloud heavy (with rain), We lead it to a dead land, and then cause water to descend thereon and thereby bring forth fruits of every kind. Thus bring We forth the dead. Haply ye may remember.

7.58. As for the good land, its vegetation cometh forth by permission of its Lord; while as for that which is bad, only the useless cometh forth (from it). Thus do We recount the tokens for people who give thanks.

Exodus 20:11 for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day and hallowed it.

Jeremiah 31:35  Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar--the LORD of hosts is his name:

Micah 6:8 He has showed you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Genesis 1:31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.

Mankind were ordered not to corrupt the earth with false religion and false education that is contrary to the inspired word of God.

Isaiah 55:10 For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and return not thither but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,

1Corinthians 15:36-38, 45, 49 36You foolish man! What you sow does not come to life unless it dies.  37And what you sow is not the body which is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body.

45Thus it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being"; the last Adam became a life-giving spirit.

49Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven.

Luke 6:43-44 For no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit; 44for each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thorns, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush.

7.59. We sent Noah (of old) unto his people, and he said: O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other God save Him. Lo! I fear for you the retribution of an Awful Day.

7.60. The chieftains of his people said: Lo! we see thee surely in plain error.

7.61. He said: O my people! There is no error in me, but I am a messenger from the Lord of the Worlds.

7.62. I convey unto you the messages of my Lord and give good counsel unto you, and know from Allah that which ye know not.

7.63. Marvel ye that there should come unto you a Reminder from your Lord by means of a man among you, that he may warn you, and that ye may keep from evil, and that haply ye may find mercy.

7.64. But they denied him, so We saved him and those with him in the ship, and We drowned those who denied Our tokens. Lo! they were blind folk.

Isaiah 46:9 remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, (ESV)

2Peter 2:5 if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven other persons, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly;

Genesis 6:8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.

Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, took heed and constructed an ark for the saving of his household; by this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness which comes by faith.

1Peter 3:20 who formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water.

God saved Noah and his family. The ungodly were destroyed as they were blinded by the corruption that was in the world.

7.65. And unto (the tribe of) A'ad (We sent) their brother, Hud. He said: O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other God save Him. Will ye not ward off (evil)?

7.66. The chieftains of his people, who were disbelieving, said: Lo! we surely see thee in foolishness, and lo! we deem thee of the liars.

7.67. He said: O my people! There is no foolishness in me, but I am a messenger from the Lord of the Worlds.

7.68. I convey unto you the messages of my Lord and am for you a true adviser.

7.69. Marvel ye that there should come unto you a Reminder from your Lord by means of a man among you, that he may warn you? Remember how He made you viceroys after Noah's folk, and gave you growth of stature. Remember (all) the bounties of your Lord, that haply ye may be successful.

7.70. They said: Hast come unto us that we should serve Allah alone, and forsake what our fathers worshipped? Then bring upon us that wherewith thou threatenest us if thou art of the truthful!

7.71. He said: Terror and wrath from your Lord have already fallen on you. Would ye wrangle with me over names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which no warrant from Allah hath been revealed? Then await (the consequence), lo! I (also) am of those awaiting (it).

7.72. And We saved him and those with him by a mercy from Us, and We cut the root of those who denied Our revelations and were not believers.

Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered him, “It is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve.’” (ESV)

2Peter 1:20-21 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. (NAS)

Romans 8:7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. (ESV)

A few generations later another messenger warned his people who believed in the traditions of their fathers to return to the worship of Allah but to no avail. They too perished when the day of adversity and punishment visited them. Only the messenger and those who heeded his warning and repented of their wicked ways were saved from destruction.

7.73. And to (the tribe of) Thamud (We sent) their brother Salih. He said: O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other God save Him. A wonder from your Lord hath come unto you. Lo! this is the camel of Allah, a token unto you; so let her feed in Allah's earth, and touch her not with hurt lest painful torment seize you.

7.74. And remember how He made you viceroys after A'ad and gave you station in the earth. Ye choose castles in the plains and hew the mountains into dwellings. So remember (all) the bounties of Allah and do not evil, making mischief in the earth.

7.75. The chieftains of his people, who were scornful, said unto those whom they despised, unto such of them as believed: Know ye that Salih is one sent from his Lord? They said: Lo! In that wherewith he hath been sent we are believers.

7.76. Those who were scornful said: Lo! in that which ye believe we are disbelievers.

7.77. So they hamstrung the she-camel, and they flouted the commandment of their Lord, and they said: O Salih! Bring upon us that thou threatenest if thou art indeed of those sent (from Allah).

7.78. So the earthquake seized them, and morning found them prostrate in their dwelling-place.

7.79. And (Salih) turned from them and said: O my people! I delivered my Lord's message unto you and gave you good advice, but ye love not good advisers.

Deuteronomy 6:13 It is the LORD your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear. (ESV)

2Chronicles 36:16 But they kept mocking the messengers of God, despising his words and scoffing at his prophets, until the wrath of the LORD rose against his people, until there was no remedy. (ESV)

Salih was sent to his people to warn them of their ways and return to worship the One True God. They chose to deny the revelations of God and asked for the punishment to be brought upon them. They perished when the earthquake seized them.

7.80. And Lot! (Remember) when he said unto his folk: Will ye commit abomination such as no creature ever did before you?

7.81. Lo! ye come with lust unto men instead of women. Nay, but ye are wanton folk.

7.82. And the answer of his people was only that they said (one to another): Turn them out of your township. They are folk, forsooth, who keep pure.

7.83. And We rescued him and his household, save his wife, who was of those who stayed behind.

7.84. And We rained a rain upon them. See now the nature of the consequence of evil-doers!

Genesis 19:23-26 The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zoar. 24Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD (Yahovah) out of heaven; 25and he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.  26But Lot's wife behind him looked back, and she became a pillar of salt.

Jude 1:7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which likewise indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire. (ESV)

Jeremiah 50:40 As when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring cities, declares the LORD, so no man shall dwell there, and no son of man shall sojourn in her. (ESV)

Ezekiel 16:49-50 Behold, this was the guilt of your sister Sodom: she and her daughters had pride, surfeit of food, and prosperous ease, but did not aid the poor and needy. 50They were haughty, and did abominable things before me; therefore I removed them, when I saw it.

No person espousing the faith will be allowed to attain to the First Resurrection who engages in sodomy and sexual immorality.

7.85. And unto Midian (We sent) their brother, Shu'eyb. He said: O my people! Serve Allah. Ye have no other God save Him. Lo! a clear proof hath come unto you from your Lord; so give full measure and full weight and wrong not mankind in their goods, and work not confusion in the earth after the fair ordering thereof. That will be better for you, if ye are believers.

7.86. Lurk not on every road to threaten (wayfarers), and to turn away from Allah's path him who believeth in Him, and to seek to make it crooked. And remember, when ye were but few, how He did multiply you. And see the nature of the consequence for the corrupters!

7.87. And if there is a party of you which believeth in that wherewith I have been sent, and there is a party which believeth not, then have patience until Allah judge between us. He is the Best of all who deal in judgment.

7.88. The chieftains of his people, who were scornful, said: Surely we will drive thee out, O Shu'eyb, and those who believe with thee, from our township, unless ye return to our religion. He said: Even though we hate it?

7.89. We should have invented a lie against Allah if we returned to your religion after Allah hath rescued us from it. It is not for us to return to it unless Allah our Lord should (so) will. Our Lord comprehendeth all things in knowledge. In Allah do we put our trust. Our Lord! Decide with truth between us and our folk, for Thou art the best of those who make decision.

7.90. But the chieftains of his people, who were disbelieving, said: If ye follow Shu'eyb, then truly ye shall be the losers.

7.91. So the earthquake seized them and morning found them prostrate in their dwelling-place.

7.92. Those who denied Shu'eyb became as though they had not dwelt there. Those who denied Shu'eyb, they were the losers.

7.93. So he turned from them and said: O my people! I delivered my Lord's messages unto you and gave you good advice; then how can I sorrow for a people that rejected (truth)?

7.94. And We sent no prophet unto any township but We did afflict its folk with tribulation and adversity that haply they might grow humble.

7.95. Then changed We the evil plight for good till they grew affluent and said: Tribulation and distress did touch our fathers. Then We seized them unawares, when they perceived not.

7.96. And if the people of the townships had believed and kept from evil, surely We should have opened for them blessings from the sky and from the earth. But (unto every messenger) they gave the lie, and so We seized them on account of what they used to earn.

7.97. Are the people of the townships then secure from the coming of Our wrath upon them as a night-raid while they sleep?

7.98. Or are the people of the townships then secure from the coming of Our wrath upon them in the daytime while they play?

7.99. Are they then secure from Allah's scheme? None deemeth himself secure from Allah's scheme save folk that perish.

7.100. Is it not an indication to those who inherit the land after its people (who thus reaped the consequence of evil-doing) that, if We will, We can smite them for their sins and print upon their hearts so that they hear not?

7.101. Such were the townships. We relate some tidings of them unto thee (Muhammad). Their messengers verily came unto them with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but they could not believe because they had before denied. Thus doth Allah print upon the hearts of disbelievers (that they hear not).

7.102. We found no (loyalty to any) covenant in most of them. Nay, most of them We found wrong-doers.

Leviticus 19:36 You shall have just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt.

Proverbs 11:1 A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is his delight.

James 3:16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.

Hosea 6:9 As robbers lie in wait for a man, so the priests are banded together; they murder on the way to Shechem, yea, they commit villainy.

Judges 9:25 And the men of Shechem put men in ambush against him on the mountain tops, and they robbed all who passed by them along that way; and it was told Abimelech.

The messenger warned the Midianites against worshiping false gods, defrauding the citizens by using incorrect weights and measures, and against lying in ambush and robbing and killing travellers on their journeys. They were not to mislead the people from the way of truth. The leaders among the people instigated their followers to reject the messenger and gave him a hard time. The messenger's job is to deliver the message. Those who reject the message end up in ruin. So those who believe are saved while the wrongdoers are punished. Adversity and trials will work out for good for the believers.

Deuteronomy 8:2 And you shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments, or not.

Romans 8:28 We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him, who are called according to his purpose.

Thus these prophets were sent to the sons of Keturah through Midian, and to A’ad through Hud, and to Sodom and Gomorrah through the three Yahovahs of Genesis 18 and 19 at the time of Abraham, and later to the sons of Lot and Moab and  particularly to Egypt through Moses.

7.103. Then, after them, We sent Moses with our tokens unto Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they repelled them. Now, see the nature of the consequence for the corrupters!

7.104. Moses said: O Pharaoh! Lo! I am a messenger from the Lord of the Worlds,

7.105. Approved upon condition that I speak concerning Allah nothing but the truth. I come unto you (lords of Egypt) with a clear proof from your Lord. So let the Children of Israel go with me.

Exodus 5:1-2 Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.'"  2But Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should heed his voice and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, and moreover I will not let Israel go."

7.106. (Pharaoh) said: If thou comest with a token, then produce it, if thou art of those who speak the truth.

7.107. Then he flung down his staff and lo! it was a serpent manifest;

Exodus 7:9-10 When Pharaoh says to you, 'Prove yourselves by working a miracle,' then you shall say to Aaron, 'Take your rod and cast it down before Pharaoh, that it may become a serpent.'" 10So Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did as the LORD commanded; Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh and his servants, and it became a serpent.

7.108. And he drew forth his hand (from his bosom), and lo! it was white for the beholders.

7.109. The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said: Lo! this is some knowing wizard,

7.110. Who would expel you from your land. Now what do ye advise?

7.111. They said (unto Pharaoh): Put him off (a while) - him and his brother - and send into the cities summoners,

7.112. To bring each knowing wizard unto thee.

7.113. And the wizards came to Pharaoh, saying: Surely there will be a reward for us if we are victors.

7.114. He answered: Yes, and surely ye shall be of those brought near (to me).

7.115. They said: O Moses! Either throw (first) or let us be the first throwers?

7.116. He said: Throw! And when they threw they cast a spell upon the people's eyes, and overawed them, and produced a mighty spell.

7.117. And We inspired Moses (saying): Throw thy staff! And lo! it swallowed up their lying show.

7.118. Thus was the Truth vindicated and that which they were doing was made vain.

7.119. Thus were they there defeated and brought low.

7.120. And the wizards fell down prostrate,

7.121. Crying: We believe in the Lord of the Worlds,

7.122. The Lord of Moses and Aaron.

7.123. Pharaoh said: Ye believe in Him before I give you leave! Lo! this is the plot that ye have plotted in the city that ye may drive its people hence. But ye shall come to know!

7.124. Surely I shall have your hands and feet cut off upon alternate sides. Then I shall crucify you every one.

7.125. They said: Lo! We are about to return unto our Lord!

7.126. Thou takest vengeance on us only forasmuch as we believed the tokens of our Lord when they came unto us. Our Lord! Vouchsafe unto us steadfastness and make us die as men who have surrendered (unto Thee).

7.127. The chiefs of Pharaoh's people said: (O King), wilt thou suffer Moses and his people to make mischief in the land, and flout thee and thy gods? He said: We will slay their sons and spare their women, for lo! we are in power over them.

Exodus 7:11-13 Then Pharaoh summoned the wise men and the sorcerers; and they also, the magicians of Egypt, did the same by their secret arts. 12For every man cast down his rod, and they became serpents. But Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods. 13Still Pharaoh's heart was hardened, and he would not listen to them; as the LORD had said.

It seems that Moses and Aaron left Pharaoh's presence and the interaction between Pharaoh and his people continued. He reminds them that he will kill the male Hebrew children. The second half of ayat 127 appears to refer to Exodus 1 verses 15 and 16.

7.128. And Moses said unto his people: Seek help in Allah and endure. Lo! the earth is Allah's. He giveth it for an inheritance to whom He will. And lo! the sequel is for those who keep their duty (unto Him).

7.129. They said: We suffered hurt before thou camest unto us, and since thou hast come unto us. He said: It may be that your Lord is going to destroy your adversary and make you viceroys in the earth, that He may see how ye behave.

Ayats 128 and 129 are a retelling of Exodus 6 verses 1 to 9.

7.130. And we straitened Pharaoh's folk with famine and dearth of fruits, that peradventure they might heed.

7.131. But whenever good befell them, they said: This is ours; and whenever evil smote them they ascribed it to the evil auspices of Moses and those with him. Surely their evil auspice was only with Allah. But most of them knew not.

7.132. And they said: Whatever portent thou bringest wherewith to bewitch us, we shall not put faith in thee.

7.133. So We sent against them the flood and the locusts and the vermin and the frogs and the blood - a succession of clear signs. But they were arrogant and became a guilty folk.

7.134. And when the terror fell on them they cried: O Moses! Pray for us unto thy Lord, because He hath a covenant with thee. If thou removest the terror from us we verily will trust thee and will let the Children of Israel go with thee.

7.135. But when We did remove from them the terror for a term which they must reach, behold! they broke their covenant.

7.136. Therefore We took retribution from them; therefore We drowned them in the sea: because they denied Our revelations and were heedless of them.

7.137. And We caused the folk who were despised to inherit the eastern parts of the land and the western parts thereof which We had blessed. And the fair word of thy Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of their endurance; and We annihilated (all) that Pharaoh and his folk had done and that they had contrived.

The above is a retelling of the events that transpired in Exodus 7:14 to Exodus 11. The Pharaoh and his army drowned in the sea.

God dealt with the idolatry of Egypt. The miracles are explained in the paper Moses and the Gods of Egypt (No. 105).

7.138. And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and they came unto a people who were given up to idols which they had. They said: O Moses! Make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: Lo! ye are a folk who know not.

7.139. Lo! as for these, their way will be destroyed and all that they are doing is in vain.

7.140. He said: Shall I seek for you a god other than Allah when He hath favoured you above (all) creatures?

Romans 8:7 For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, indeed it cannot;

1Samuel 8:5 and said to him, "Behold, you are old and your sons do not walk in your ways; now appoint for us a king to govern us like all the nations."

The average person wants to be like his neighbour and just follow the crowd to do what pleases him.

Romans 3:11-12 no one understands, no one seeks for God. 12All have turned aside, together they have gone wrong; no one does good, not even one."

They all want to be on the high road to destruction. God gives clear instructions but mankind want to do what pleases it.

Deuteronomy 7:5-10 But thus shall you deal with them: you shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire.  6"For you are a people holy to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for his own possession, out of all the peoples that are on the face of the earth. 7It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the LORD set his love upon you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples; 8but it is because the LORD loves you, and is keeping the oath which he swore to your fathers, that the LORD has brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you from the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, 10and requites to their face those who hate him, by destroying them; he will not be slack with him who hates him, he will requite him to his face.

7.141. And (remember) when We did deliver you from Pharaoh's folk who were afflicting you with dreadful torment, slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. That was a tremendous trial from your Lord.

Exodus 3:7-8 Then the LORD said, "I have seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters; I know their sufferings,  8and I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

Exodus 1:14, 16 14
and made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds of work in the field; in all their work they made them serve with rigor.

16"When you serve as midwife to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the birthstool, if it is a son, you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, she shall live."

7.142. And when We did appoint for Moses thirty nights (of solitude), and added to them ten, and he completed the whole time appointed by his Lord of forty nights; and Moses said unto his brother, Aaron: Take my place among the people. Do right, and follow not the way of mischief-makers.

Exodus 24:14,18 14And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. And behold, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever has a dispute, let him go to them.”

18 And Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. And Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.

7.143. And when Moses came to Our appointed tryst and his Lord had spoken unto him, he said: My Lord! Show me (Thy Self), that I may gaze upon Thee. He said: Thou wilt not see Me, but gaze upon the mountain! If it stand still in its place, then thou wilt see Me. And when his Lord revealed (His) glory to the mountain He sent it crashing down. And Moses fell down senseless. And when he woke he said: Glory unto Thee! I turn unto Thee repentant, and I am the first of (true) believers.

Exodus 33:18-23 Moses said, "I pray thee, show me thy glory." 19And he said, "I will make all my goodness pass before you, and will proclaim before you my name 'The LORD'; and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy. 20But," he said, "you cannot see my face; for man shall not see me and live." 21And the LORD said, "Behold, there is a place by me where you shall stand upon the rock; 22and while my glory passes by I will put you in a cleft of the rock, and I will cover you with my hand until I have passed by; 23then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back; but my face shall not be seen."

7.144. He said: O Moses! I have preferred thee above mankind by My messages and by My speaking (unto thee). So hold that which I have given thee, and be among the thankful.

Exodus 33:11 Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his servant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not depart from the tent.

Deuteronomy 34:10  And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,

7.145. And We wrote for him, upon the tablets, the lesson to be drawn from all things and the explanation of all things, then (bade him): Hold it fast; and command thy people (saying): Take the better (course made clear) therein. I shall show thee the abode of evil-livers.

Exodus 31:18 And he gave to Moses, when he had made an end of speaking with him upon Mount Sinai, the two tables of the testimony, tables of stone, written with the finger of God.

Deuteronomy 9:11
And at the end of forty days and forty nights the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, the tables of the covenant.

7.146. I shall turn away from My revelations those who magnify themselves wrongfully in the earth, and if they see each token believe it not, and if they see the way of righteousness choose it not for (their) way, and if they see the way of error choose it for (their) way. That is because they deny Our revelations and are used to disregard them.

Isaiah 59:2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you so that he does not hear.

Ezekiel 39:23
And the nations shall know that the house of Israel went into captivity for their iniquity, because they dealt so treacherously with me that I hid my face from them and gave them into the hand of their adversaries, and they all fell by the sword.

7.147. Those who deny Our revelations and the meeting of the Hereafter, their works are fruitless. Are they requited aught save what they used to do?

7.148. And the folk of Moses, after (he left them), chose a calf (for worship), (made) out of their ornaments, of saffron hue, which gave a lowing sound. Saw they not that it spake not unto them nor guided them to any way? They chose it, and became wrong-doers.

7.149. And when they feared the consequences thereof and saw that they had gone astray, they said: Unless our Lord have mercy on us and forgive us, we verily are of the lost.

7.150. And when Moses returned unto his people, angry and grieved, he said: Evil is that (course) which ye took after I had left you. Would ye hasten on the judgment of your Lord? And he cast down the tablets, and he seized his brother by the head, dragging him toward him. He said: Son of my mother! Lo! the folk did judge me weak and almost killed me. Oh, make not mine enemies to triumph over me and place me not among the evil-doers.

7.151. He said: My Lord! Have mercy on me and on my brother; bring us into Thy mercy, Thou the Most Merciful of all who show mercy.

7.152. Lo! Those who chose the calf (for worship), terror from their Lord and humiliation will come upon them in the life of the world. Thus do We requite those who invent a lie.

Exodus 32:3-8, 11-28, 35  3So all the people took off the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. 4And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a goldena calf. And they said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!” 5When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, Tomorrow shall be a feast to the Lord.” 6And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play. 7And the Lord said to Moses, “Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. 8They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’”

11But Moses implored the Lord his God and said, “O Lord, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12Why should the Egyptians say, ‘With evil intent did he bring them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your burning anger and relent from this disaster against your people. 13Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’” 14And the Lord relented from the disaster that he had spoken of bringing on his people.15Then Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, tablets that were written on both sides; on the front and on the back they were written. 16The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets. 17When Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a noise of war in the camp.” 18But he said, “It is not the sound of shouting for victory, or the sound of the cry of defeat, but the sound of singing that I hear.” 19And as soon as he came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses’ anger burned hot, and he threw the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. 20He took the calf that they had made and burned it with fire and ground it to powder and scattered it on the water and made the people of Israel drink it.21And Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you that you have brought such a great sin upon them?” 22And Aaron said, “Let not the anger of my lord burn hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil. 23For they said to me, ‘Make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 24So I said to them, ‘Let any who have gold take it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf.”25And when Moses saw that the people had broken loose (for Aaron had let them break loose, to the derision of their enemies), 26then Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said, “Who is on the Lord’s side? Come to me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered around him. 27And he said to them, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel, ‘Put your sword on your side each of you, and go to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and each of you kill his brother and his companion and his neighbor.’” 28And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And that day about three thousand men of the people fell.

35Then the Lord sent a plague on the people, because they made the calf, the one that Aaron made. (ESV)

7.154. Then, when the anger of Moses abated, he took up the tablets, and in their inscription there was guidance and mercy for all those who fear their Lord.

And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread nor drank water. And he wrote upon the tables the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.

7.155. And Moses chose of his people seventy men for Our appointed tryst and, when the trembling came on them, he said: My Lord! If Thou hadst willed Thou hadst destroyed them long before, and me with them. Wilt thou destroy us for that which the ignorant among us did? It is but Thy trial (of us). Thou sendest whom Thou wilt astray and guidest whom Thou wilt: Thou art our Protecting Friend, therefore forgive us and have mercy on us, Thou, the Best of all who show forgiveness.

7.156. And ordain for us in this world that which is good, and in the Hereafter (that which is good), Lo! We have turned unto Thee. He said: I smite with My punishment whom I will, and My mercy embraceth all things, therefore I shall ordain it for those who ward off (evil) and pay the poor-due, and those who believe Our revelations;

7.157. Those who follow the messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, whom they will find described in the Torah and the Gospel (which are) with them. He will enjoin on them that which is right and forbid them that which is wrong. He will make lawful for them all good things and prohibit for them only the foul; and he will relieve them of their burden and the fetters that they used to wear. Then those who believe in him, and honour him, and help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him: they are the successful.

Numbers 11:24-25 So Moses went out and told the people the words of the LORD; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and placed them round about the tent. 25Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the spirit that was upon him and put it upon the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did so no more.

The selection and appointment of the Seventy (Two) was made at the order of Christ through Moses and then again by Christ through the church to replace the Sanhedrin in the church of the Seventy (Two) of Luke 10:1,17 and the demons were subject to them. The church took over power from the Sanhedrin and the demons were no longer subject to them but to the council of the churches which was the Muhammad which over 2000 years made up the 144,000 with the prophets.

God guides His children who obey Him, the rest are allowed to grow astray. Those who repent and believe receive mercy and forgiveness.

Deuteronomy 18:18-19 (God) will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brethren; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I command him. 19And whoever will not give heed to my words which he shall speak in my name, I myself will require it of him.

John 8:12 Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

7.158. Say (O Muhammad): O mankind! Lo! I am the messenger of Allah to you all - (the messenger of) Him unto Whom belongeth the Sovereignty of the heavens and the earth. There is no God save Him. He quickeneth and He giveth death. So believe in Allah and His messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write, who believeth in Allah and in His Words, and follow him that haply ye may be led aright.

7.159. And of Moses' folk there is a community who lead with truth and establish justice therewith.

7.160. We divided them into twelve tribes, nations; and We inspired Moses, when his people asked him for water, saying: Smite with thy staff the rock! And there gushed forth therefrom twelve springs, so that each tribe knew their drinking-place. And we caused the white cloud to overshadow them and sent down for them the manna and the quails (saying): Eat of the good things wherewith we have provided you. They wronged Us not, but they were wont to wrong themselves.

1Chronicles. 29:11-12 Thine, O LORD, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty; for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all. 12Both riches and honor come from thee, and thou rulest over all. In thy hand are power and might; and in thy hand it is to make great and to give strength to all.

Exodus 16:12-15 "I have heard the murmurings of the people of Israel; say to them, 'At twilight you shall eat flesh, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread; then you shall know that I am the LORD your God.'" 13In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning dew lay round about the camp. 14And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine, flake-like thing, fine as hoarfrost on the ground. 15When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another, "What is it?" For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them, "It is the bread which the LORD has given you to eat.

7.162. But those of them who did wrong changed the word which had been told them for another saying, and We sent down upon them wrath from heaven for their wrongdoing.

Numbers 16 verses 41 to 50 tells of a plague in the wilderness.

Romans 14:12 So each of us shall give account of himself to God.

7.163. Ask them (O Muhammad) of the township that was by the sea, how they did break the Sabbath, how their big fish came unto them visibly upon their Sabbath day and on a day when they did not keep Sabbath came they not unto them. Thus did We try them for that they were evil-livers.

Deuteronomy 8:2 And you shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments, or not.

It was to try them to see if they would keep the commandments. See the paper Sabbath in the Qur’an (No. 274).

Exodus 16:4 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law or not.

7.164. And when a community among them said: Why preach ye to a folk whom Allah is about to destroy or punish with an awful doom, they said: In order to be free from guilt before your Lord, and that haply they may ward off (evil).

Jeremiah 20:8-9 For whenever I speak, I cry out, I shout, "Violence and destruction!" For the word of the LORD has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. 9If I say, "I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name," there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.

1Corinthians 9:16 For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!

It is necessary for the messenger to deliver the message. Remember Jonah ran away but God brought him back to do what he was assigned to do.

7.165. And when they forgot that whereof they had been reminded, We rescued those who forbade wrong, and visited those who did wrong with dreadful punishment because they were evil-livers.

Noah warned of the impending destruction. The people did not heed the warning and they were drowned in the flood, whereas Noah and his family were saved.

This has happened time and again throughout history.

7.166. So when they took pride in that which they had been forbidden, We said unto them: Be ye apes despised and loathed!

They are reminded to keep the Sabbaths and commandments of God and they failed to do so.

Psalm 81:11-12 “But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me. 12So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to follow their own counsels. (ESV)

Romans 1:28-32 And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a base mind and to improper conduct. 29They were filled with all manner of wickedness, evil, covetousness, malice. Full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malignity, they are gossips, 30slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, 31foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32Though they know God's decree that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do them but approve those who practice them.

7.167. And (remember) when thy Lord proclaimed that He would raise against them till the Day of Resurrection those who would lay on them a cruel torment. Lo! verily thy Lord is swift in prosecution and lo! verily He is Forgiving, Merciful.

Deuteronomy 28:49-50 The LORD will bring a nation against you from afar, from the end of the earth, as swift as the eagle flies, a nation whose language you do not understand, 50a nation of stern countenance, who shall not regard the person of the old or show favor to the young,

Matthew 24:21 For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.

Psalm 145:8 The LORD is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. (ESV)

7.168. And We have sundered them in the earth as (separate) nations. Some of them are righteous, and some far from that. And We have tried them with good things and evil things that haply they might return.

Psalm 109 recounts of many generations that went through prosperity and adversity so they may learn to turn to God. Israel during the time of the Judges went through times of obedience during the life of the judge and soon lapsed into disobedience and faced adversity. (See also the paper Samson and the Judges (No. 073).)

7.169. And a generation hath succeeded them who inherited the scriptures. They grasp the goods of this low life (as the price of evil-doing) and say: It will be forgiven us. And if there came to them (again) the offer of the like, they would accept it (and would sin again). Hath not the covenant of the Scripture been taken on their behalf that they should not speak aught concerning Allah save the truth? And they have studied that which is therein. And the abode of the Hereafter is better, for those who ward off (evil). Have ye then no sense?

Israel inherited the Scriptures and agreed to keep the terms of the covenant but lapsed into disobedience again and again until finally they were sent into captivity. So also was it to be with the sons of Keturah and Ishmael from the prophet and the churches and they sin to this day.

7.170. And as for those who make (men) keep the Scripture, and establish worship - lo! We squander not the wages of reformers.

Jeremiah 17:10 "I the LORD search the mind and try the heart, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings."

Hebrews 6:10-12 For God is not so unjust as to overlook your work and the love which you showed for his sake in serving the saints, as you still do. 11And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness in realizing the full assurance of hope until the end, 12so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

And the Arabs defied the prophet and the Council of the Muhammad and established the Hadith to defy the Scriptures. They will be dealt with at the return of the Witnesses and the Messiah.

7.171. And when We shook the Mount above them as it were a covering, and they supposed that it was going to fall upon them (and We said): Hold fast that which We have given you, and remember that which is therein, that ye may ward off (evil).

Exodus 19:5-8, 16  Now therefore, if you will obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my own possession among all peoples; for all the earth is mine, 6 and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel." 7 So Moses came and called the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the LORD had commanded him. 8And all the people answered together and said, "All that the LORD has spoken we will do." And Moses reported the words of the people to the LORD.

16 On the morning of the third day there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled.

7.172. And (remember) when thy Lord brought forth from the Children of Adam, from their reins, their seed, and made them testify of themselves, (saying): Am I not your Lord? They said: Yea, verily. We testify. (That was) lest ye should say at the Day of Resurrection: Lo! of this we were unaware;

It seems that the 144,000 testify that Allah is the One True God. Among these are Gentiles too who are grafted into Spiritual Israel. Then there is also the Great Multitude that comes out of all nations, tribes and languages. There should be a sizable number of Gentiles in this group. We are aware too that there may be millions of others called to the faith who confessed that Allah is GOD MOST HIGH but fell by the way side.

Many were called but few were chosen. Two entire churches are rejected from the Kingdom in the First Resurrection and many have the lampstand taken from them. See the text The Pillars of Philadelphia (No. 283).

The gospel message is being preached unto all nations. The last message is delivered by the last Church in Jeremiah 4:15-16 warning of the coming of the Messiah. The two Witnesses will deliver the final warning message (Rev. 11:3ff). So the children of Adam are without any excuse whatsoever.

7.173. Or lest ye should say: (It is) only (that) our fathers ascribed partners to Allah of old and we were (their) seed after them. Wilt Thou destroy us on account of that which those who follow falsehood did?

Romans 3:23-24
For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:  (KJV)

This is a free gift. They are made right with God by being made free from sin through Jesus Christ.

Psalm 53:2-3 God looks down from heaven upon the sons of men to see if there are any that are wise, that seek after God. 3They have all fallen away; they are all alike depraved; there is none that does good, no, not one.

7.174. Thus we detail the revelations that haply they may return.

Romans 2:4 God has been kind to you. He has been very patient, waiting for you to change. But you think nothing of his kindness. Maybe you don’t understand that God is kind to you so that you will decide to change your lives. (ERV)

2Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some people think of slowness; on the contrary, he is patient with you; for it is not his purpose that anyone should be destroyed, but that everyone should turn from his sins. (CJB)

7.175. Recite unto them the tale of him to whom We gave Our revelations, but he sloughed them off, so Satan overtook him and he became of those who lead astray.

7.176. And had We willed We could have raised him by their means, but he clung to the earth and followed his own lust. Therefor his likeness is as the likeness of a dog: if thou attackest him he panteth with his tongue out, and if thou leavest him he panteth with his tongue out. Such is the likeness of the people who deny Our revelations. Narrate unto them the history (of the men of old), that haply they may take thought.

7.177. Evil as an example are the folk who denied Our revelations, and were wont to wrong themselves.

Acts 1:16-19 "Brethren, the scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David, concerning Judas who was guide to those who arrested Jesus. 17For he was numbered among us, and was allotted his share in this ministry. 18(Now this man bought a field with the reward of his wickedness; and falling headlong he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out. 19And it became known to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the field was called in their language Akeldama, that is, Field of Blood.)

1John 2:22-23 Who is the liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, he who denies the Father and the Son. 23No one who denies the Son has the Father. He who confesses the Son has the Father also.

7.178. He whom Allah leadeth, he indeed is led aright, while he whom Allah sendeth astray - they indeed are losers.

Romans 8:5-7 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 6For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. 7For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. (ESV)

7.179. Already have We urged unto hell many of the jinn and humankind, having hearts wherewith they understand not, and having eyes wherewith they see not, and having ears wherewith they hear not. These are as the cattle - nay, but they are worse! These are the neglectful.

Matthew 13:14-15 With them indeed is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah which says: 'You shall indeed hear but never understand, and you shall indeed see but never perceive. 15For this people's heart has grown dull, and their ears are heavy of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should perceive with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and turn for me to heal them.'

7.181. And of those whom We created there is a nation who guide with the Truth and establish justice therewith.

The elect guide others into truth. The elect are the nation of Spiritual Israel. These are they who are baptised and have hands laid on for the Holy Spirit and keep the Sabbaths, New Moons and Feasts of God according to the Temple Calendar as kept by the Churches of God over the two millennia (see God’s Calendar (No. 156) and Hebrew and Islamic Calendar Reconciled (No. 053)).

The pagan Arabs of the Hadith have destroyed the calendar in Islam after the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs and has to be corrected or punished.

7.187. They ask thee of the (destined) Hour, when will it come to port. Say: Knowledge thereof is with my Lord only. He alone will manifest it at its proper time. It is heavy in the heavens and the earth. It cometh not to you save unawares. They question thee as if thou couldst be well informed thereof. Say: Knowledge thereof is with Allah only, but most of mankind know not.
