Ezra Chapters 4-10 (RSV)
Notes:
The name of the Father in the OT is Eloah. He is the
One True God. The details here are included in the paper Effects of the 20th Century Doctrines
on the Nature of God (No. 076D) among many
other important matters on the Nature of God.
Eloah is the God of the Temple, and we know from
Deuteronomy 32:15 that He is the creator and from Deuteronomy 32:17 that He is
the object of sacrifice. He is the God of the Bible.
He is the Most High (Elyon) and He divided the nations according to the number
of the sons of God (Deut. 32:8 RSV and DSS). He gave Yahovah's
portion to be the Children of Israel. Thus, Elyon and Yahovah, as God and son
of God, are set in place here in the Torah where Yahovah is one of the sons of
God and Eloah is set as the creator. For this reason the Masoretic Text (MT)
was forged in this text in the post-Temple period and that is why the KJV is
false.
Job mentions Eloah in 45 places. The redeemer is listed as one of the Thousand
and is not Eloah in Job (Job 33:23).
We know for an absolute fact that Eloah is God the Father from Proverbs 30:4-5.
His name is supplied in the Hebrew of verse 5.
This name is singular and admits of no plurality whatsoever. The texts
completely destroy the myth that Armstrong created, namely that the OT referred
only to Christ who was the God of the OT and the Father was unknown in the OT.
That is a lie.
Ezra identifies Eloah as the God of the Temple and proceeds from the texts in
Ezra 4:24 to identify the Temple as the House of Eloah, The God (Eloah) of
Israel (Ezra 5:1). The prophets at the House of Eloah are the prophets of Eloah
(Ezra 5:2). It is the "eye" of Eloah that observes and commands the
activities at the Temple.
Darius was petitioned over the House of the Great Eloah at Jerusalem (Ezra
5:8). The Jews knew and stated that they were the servants of the Great
Eloah of Heaven and Earth (Ezra 5:11). But it was the fathers of Judah that
provoked the Eloah of Heaven to wrath. (Ezra 5:12). There is only one Eloah of
Heaven and Earth and that is the Father. To suggest otherwise is idolatrous
blasphemy.
The Jews acknowledged that it was Cyrus that gave the command to build the
House of Eloah at Jerusalem (Ezra 5:13).
The vessels of the House of Eloah were returned to the prince of Judah (Ezra
5:14) and ordered to be returned to the House of Eloah as it was built in place
(Ezra 5:15). The request was made as to whether the decree of Cyrus existed
regarding the House of Eloah (Ezra 5:17).
Darius ordered a search and the decree of Cyrus was found regarding the
construction of the House of Eloah at Jerusalem (Ezra 6:3) as well as the
return and use of the vessels of gold and silver, taken by Nebuchadnezzar from
the House of Eloah, be returned to the House of Eloah (Ezra 6:5). Thus the old
temple and the new temple were both the House of Eloah.
Thus the attackers were ordered to leave the construction of the House of Eloah
alone and the Jews be left to build the House of Eloah (Ezra 6:7).
The tribute beyond the river was allocated for the construction of the House of
Eloah (Ezra 6:8) and also for the sacrificial offerings to the Eloah
of Heaven (Ezra 6:9-10).
It was Eloah that caused His name to be put there in the House of Eloah and a
hundred bullocks were offered to the dedication of the House of Eloah (Ezra
6:12,16-17).
The Priests and Levites were set in divisions for the service of Eloah at
Jerusalem (Ezra 6:18).
Artaxerxes recognised Ezra as a scribe of the Law of Eloah of Heaven (Ezra
7:12). Ezra was sent to assess Jerusalem according to the Law of Eloah
which was in his hand (Ezra 7:14) and the king and his counsellors offered
silver and gold to the Eloah of Israel who is the Eloah of Heaven whose
habitation is in Jerusalem (Ezra 7:15). They had to purchase animals for
offering to Eloah in Jerusalem (Ezra 7:17) and then they were to use the rest
according to the Will of Eloah (Ezra 7:18). Then they also had to deliver the
vessels of Eloah before the House of Eloah at Jerusalem (Ezra 7:19). Whatever
else that was necessary to bestow on the House of Eloah was to be taken from
the king’s treasure house as Ezra the scribe of the Law of Eloah directed (Ezra
7:20-21. Whatever was commanded by the Eloah of Heaven was to be done
diligently for the house of the Eloah of Heaven (Ezra 7:23).
Also, the priests, Levites, singers and porters, Nethinims were ministers of
the House of Eloah and it was not lawful to impose toll, tribute or custom upon
them (Ezra 7:24).
Ezra was commanded to act according to the wisdom of Eloah to appoint
magistrates and judges. Whoever did not do the Law of Eloah and the law of the
king was to have judgment executed speedily upon them (Ezra 7:25-26).
This being, Eloah, is the One True God. His name admits of no plurality
whatsoever and the Law emanates from Him and He is the object of sacrifice at
the Temple. The priesthood including Christ as High Priest after the order of
Melchisedek worship Him and serve Him. The elohim emanate from Him as Ha
Elohim. They, as Elohim, which is a plural word, are the sons of God and they
are the council of the Elohim of the Psalms and the Council of
Revelation chapters 4 and 5.
Chapter 4
Resistance to Rebuilding the Temple
1Now when the adversaries of Judah and
Benjamin heard that the returned exiles were building a temple to the Lord, the God of Israel, 2they
approached Zerub′babel and the heads of
fathers’ houses and said to them, “Let us build with you; for we worship your
God as you do, and we have been sacrificing to him ever since the days of E′sar-had′don king of Assyria who brought us
here.” 3But Zerub′babel,
Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers’ houses in Israel said to them,
“You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we alone
will build to the Lord, the
God of Israel, as King Cyrus the king of Persia has commanded us.” 4Then
the people of the land discouraged the people of Judah, and made them afraid to
build, 5and hired counselors against
them to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even
until the reign of Darius king of Persia.
Rebuilding of Jerusalem Opposed
6And in the reign of Ahasu-e′rus, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem. 7And in the days of Ar-ta-xerx′es, Bishlam and Mith′redath and Tab′eel and the rest of their associates wrote to Ar-ta-xerx′es king of Persia; the letter was written in Aramaic and translated. 8Rehum the commander and Shim′shai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Ar-ta-xerx′es the king as follows— 9then wrote Rehum the commander, Shim′shai the scribe, and the rest of their associates, the judges, the governors, the officials, the Persians, the men of Erech, the Babylonians, the men of Susa, that is, the Elamites, 10and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Osnap′par deported and settled in the cities of Samar′ia and in the rest of the province Beyond the River, and now 11this is a copy of the letter that they sent—“To Ar-ta-xerx′es the king: Your servants, the men of the province Beyond the River, send greeting. And now 12be it known to the king that the Jews who came up from you to us have gone to Jerusalem. They are rebuilding that rebellious and wicked city; they are finishing the walls and repairing the foundations. 13Now be it known to the king that, if this city is rebuilt and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and the royal revenue will be impaired. 14Now because we eat the salt of the palace and it is not fitting for us to witness the king’s dishonor, therefore we send and inform the king, 15in order that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers. You will find in the book of the records and learn that this city is a rebellious city, hurtful to kings and provinces, and that sedition was stirred up in it from of old. That was why this city was laid waste. 16We make known to the king that, if this city is rebuilt and its walls finished, you will then have no possession in the province Beyond the River.” 17The king sent an answer: “To Rehum the commander and Shim′shai the scribe and the rest of their associates who live in Samar′ia and in the rest of the province Beyond the River, greeting. And now 18the letter which you sent to us has been plainly read before me. 19And I made a decree, and search has been made, and it has been found that this city from of old has risen against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made in it. 20And mighty kings have been over Jerusalem, who ruled over the whole province Beyond the River, to whom tribute, custom, and toll were paid. 21Therefore make a decree that these men be made to cease, and that this city be not rebuilt, until a decree is made by me. 22And take care not to be slack in this matter; why should damage grow to the hurt of the king?” 23Then, when the copy of King Ar-ta-xerx′es’ letter was read before Rehum and Shim′shai the scribe and their associates, they went in haste to the Jews at Jerusalem and by force and power made them cease. 24Then the work on the house of God which is in Jerusalem stopped; and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.

4:1-24 Opposition from Neighbours halted the building.
4:1-6
The rejoicing alerted mixed groups who claimed
fellowship in religion (2Kgs. 17:24-28).
Esarhaddon settled groups
there in 676 BCE.
v.
3 We alone will build to the Lord Excluded the others and made them adversaries, and
they remained so for centuries.
v.
4 They then set about discouraging them from
building all the days of Cyrus using these counsellors in court. Cyrus died in 529 BCE. Darius reigned
521-485, Ahasuerus Xerxes I reigned 485-464 BCE.

7-16 The Letter to King Artaxerxes
v. 7 Letter to Artaxerxes (464-423 BCE) was written in
Aramaic script from his local officials authorised by the commander and written
by the scribe. (see NOARSV note).
v. 10 Osnappar is taken to mean Assurbanipal (668-630 BCE).
Beyond the River means the Syro-Palestinian
region West of the Euphrates.
v. 13 The Persian treasury expected the payment of Tribute,
the customs levies for provincial expenses, and the tolls for
upkeep of the roads.

4:24-6:22 The
rebuilding continues.
This work stopped then until
the reign of Darius II the Persian. The OARSV erroneously covers this fact up
and attempts to go back to Darius I, which is absurd. The construction was
stopped for quite some time down to the reign of Darius II. The claims to limit
it to Darius I are to comply with the forgeries in the Receptus and for other
reasons.
The name of God from 4:24 to
6:17 is the Chaldean Elahh (SHD 426) which is
the equivalent of SHD 433 Elowah or Eloah
the One True God who is the Father. He is the God of the Temple.
From 6:21-7:9 it reverts to
430 Elohim. As the God of Israel that gave the law to Moses and that
subordinate God of Israel was guiding the people there. This is the subordinate
God of Psalm 45:6-7. Eloah was the One True God who was the God of this God who
was Jesus Christ (Heb. 1:8-9).
7:12-26 reverts to referring
to the One True God Elahh or Eloah, The God of heaven
and whose Temple is at Jerusalem.
Chapter 5
Restoration of the Temple Resumed
1Now the prophets, Haggai and Zechari′ah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Jews
who were in Judah and Jerusalem, in the name of the God of Israel who was over
them. 2Then Zerub′babel the son
of She-al′ti-el and
Jeshua the son of Jo′zadak arose and began to
rebuild the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and with them were the prophets
of God, helping them. 3At the same time Tat′tenai
the governor of the province Beyond the River and She′thar-boz′enai
and their associates came to them and spoke to them thus, “Who gave you a
decree to build this house and to finish this structure?” 4They also
asked them this, “What are the names of the men who are building this
building?” 5But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the
Jews, and they did not stop them till a report should reach Darius and then
answer be returned by letter concerning it. 6The copy of the letter
which Tat′tenai the governor of the province
Beyond the River and She′thar-boz′enai
and his associates the governors who were in the province Beyond the River sent
to Darius the king; 7they sent him a report, in which was
written as follows: “To Darius the king, all peace. 8Be it
known to the king that we went to the province of Judah, to the house of the
great God. It is being built with huge stones, and timber is laid in the walls;
this work goes on diligently and prospers in their hands. 9Then
we asked those elders and spoke to them thus, ‘Who gave you a decree to build
this house and to finish this structure?’ 10We also asked them
their names, for your information, that we might write down the names of the
men at their head. 11And this was their reply to us: ‘We are
the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and we are rebuilding the house
that was built many years ago, which a great king of Israel built and
finished. 12But because our fathers had angered the God of
heaven, he gave them into the hand of Nebuchadnez′zar
king of Babylon, the Chalde′an, who destroyed
this house and carried away the people to Babylonia. 13However
in the first year of Cyrus king of Babylon, Cyrus the king made a decree that
this house of God should be rebuilt. 14And the gold and silver
vessels of the house of God, which Nebuchadnez′zar
had taken out of the temple that was in Jerusalem and brought into the temple
of Babylon, these Cyrus the king took out of the temple of Babylon, and they
were delivered to one whose name was Shesh-baz′zar,
whom he had made governor; 15and he said to him, “Take these
vessels, go and put them in the temple which is in Jerusalem, and let the house
of God be rebuilt on its site.” 16Then this Shesh-baz′zar came and laid the foundations of the house of
God which is in Jerusalem; and from that time until now it has been in
building, and it is not yet finished.’ 17Therefore, if it seem
good to the king, let search be made in the royal archives there in Babylon, to
see whether a decree was issued by Cyrus the king for the rebuilding of this
house of God in Jerusalem. And let the king send us his pleasure in this matter.”
Intent of Chapter 5
5:1-5 Rebuilding begins again.
5:1 The prophets, Haggai (F037) and
Zechariah (F038)
son of Iddo, were raised to tell the Jews in Judah and Jerusalem to get on with
the work (Hag. 1:1-4; 2:1-4; Zech. 4:9; 6:15).

6
The Decree of Darius
1Then Darius the king made a decree, and search was
made in Babylonia, in the house of the archives where the documents were
stored. 2And in Ecbat′ana, the
capital which is in the province of Media, a scroll was found on which this was
written: “A record. 3In the first year of Cyrus the king, Cyrus the
king issued a decree: Concerning the house of God at Jerusalem, let the house
be rebuilt, the place where sacrifices are offered and burnt offerings are
brought; its height shall be sixty cubits and its breadth sixty cubits, 4with
three courses of great stones and one course of timber; let the cost be paid
from the royal treasury. 5And also let the gold and silver vessels
of the house of God, which Nebuchadnez′zar took
out of the temple that is in Jerusalem and brought to Babylon, be restored and
brought back to the temple which is in Jerusalem, each to its place; you shall
put them in the house of God.” 6“Now
therefore, Tat′tenai, governor of the province
Beyond the River, She′thar-boz′enai, and
your associates the governors who are in the province Beyond the River, keep
away; 7let the work on this house of God alone; let the governor of
the Jews and the elders of the Jews rebuild this house of God on its site. 8Moreover
I make a decree regarding what you shall do for these elders of the Jews for
the rebuilding of this house of God; the cost is to be paid to these men in
full and without delay from the royal revenue, the tribute of the province from
Beyond the River. 9And whatever is needed—young bulls, rams, or
sheep for burnt offerings to the God of heaven, wheat, salt, wine, or oil, as
the priests at Jerusalem require—let that be given to them day by day without
fail, 10that they may offer pleasing sacrifices to the God of
heaven, and pray for the life of the king and his sons. 11Also I
make a decree that if any one alters this edict, a beam shall be pulled out of
his house, and he shall be impaled upon it, and his house shall be made a
dunghill. 12May the God who has caused his name to dwell there
overthrow any king or people that shall put forth a hand to alter this, or to
destroy this house of God which is in Jerusalem. I Darius make a decree; let it
be done with all diligence.”
Completion and Dedication of the Temple
13Then, according to the word sent by Darius the
king, Tat′tenai, the governor of the province
Beyond the River, She′thar-boz′enai, and
their associates did with all diligence what Darius the king had ordered. 14And
the elders of the Jews built and prospered, through the prophesying of Haggai
the prophet and Zechari′ah the son of Iddo.
They finished their building by command of the God of Israel and by decree of
Cyrus and Darius and Ar-ta-xerx′es king of Persia; 15and this
house was finished on the third day of the month of Adar, in the sixth year of
the reign of Darius the king. 16And
the people of Israel, the priests and the Levites, and the rest of the returned
exiles, celebrated the dedication of this house of God with joy. 17They
offered at the dedication of this house of God one hundred bulls, two hundred
rams, four hundred lambs, and as a sin offering for all Israel twelve he-goats,
according to the number of the tribes of Israel. 18And they set the
priests in their divisions and the Levites in their courses, for the service of
God at Jerusalem, as it is written in the book of Moses.
The Passover Celebrated
19On the fourteenth day of the first month the
returned exiles kept the passover. 20For
the priests and the Levites had purified themselves together; all of them were
clean. So they killed the passover lamb for all the
returned exiles, for their fellow priests, and for themselves 21it
was eaten by the people of Israel who had returned from exile, and also by every one who had joined them and separated himself from
the pollutions of the peoples of the land to worship the Lord, the God of Israel. 22And
they kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy; for the Lord had made them joyful, and had
turned the heart of the king of Assyria to them, so that he aided them in the
work of the house of God, the God of Israel.
Intent of Chapter 6
6:1-12 Edict in support of the Temple.
Search was made and the
decree of Cyrus of the First Years was found. The search was undertaken in the
reign of Darius II the Persian - see the chronology and dates in the
Introduction. Trinitarians incorrectly relocate the decree to Darius I
Hystaspes so they can relocate the dates, so that the forgeries in the Receptus
and hence the KJV are able to create a fictitious timetable to 27 CE., and they
are then faced with a half week of years problem. Their position is absurd. The
Elephantine Papyri show the details of the collections for the refurbishment of
the Temple on its construction and it is beyond doubt that the reconstruction
was done in the reign of Darius II the Persian. The decree for the
reconstruction was issued in 423 BCE. This date commenced the Seventy Weeks of
Years. Haggai and Zechariah appear to have issued their prophecies in 423 and
422 BCE. 423/22 was the First Year of the New Jubilee. This event was fifty
jubilees before 2028 CE.
Darius’ decree was made in
the Fifth year of his reign and that was the year before the completion of the
Temple. In this year the collection was taken up at Elephantine among the
Jewish garrison on the 3rd of the Egyptian month, Pnanenoth, in Year 5. They took up a collection of two
shekels per head. This was a special levy seemingly for the decoration of the
Temple when construction was completed in 422 BCE.
6:9 shows that the decree made provision for the burnt
offerings (Lev. Ch. 1), the meal offering (Lev. 2:1-13) and the drink offering
(Lev. 23:13). The punishment for interference was impalement (see also Est.
2:23; 9:14; Herodotus Hist. III, 159.
Making one's house a dunghill was the limit of contempt (2Kgs. 10:27;
Dan. 2:5).
vv. 13-18 Completion of the Temple.
The Temple was completed on 3
Adar of the Sixth year of Darius II in 422 BCE. (i.e. March-April). The dates
given in the OARSV are for Darius I based on the forgeries in the Receptus and
the KJV and the mythical reconstruction of the Seventy Weeks of Years (see also
No. 013).
vv. 16-22 Concluding Dedication.
This was a new dedication as
Solomon had dedicated his (1Kgs. 8:5, 63). Once this had been completed the
Priests and Levites could take up their courses. No such division of courses is
contained in the Pentateuch (see also OARSV n.)
The feasts of the Passover
and Unleavened Bread were undertaken. Darius II had issued the decree for the
Passover and it was issued all over the Empire. The decree of the Satrap
Arsames to the Jews in Egypt including Elephantine are at the Introduction and
in No. 013.
The text refers to the King of Assyria and that was
because Darius was the King over the entire area of the North from India to
Egypt.

The Coming and Work of Ezra
1Now after this, in the reign of
Ar-ta-xerx′es king of Persia, Ezra the son of Serai′ah,
son of Azari′ah, son of Hilki′ah, 2son
of Shallum, son of Zadok, son of Ahi′tub, 3son
of Amari′ah, son of Azari′ah,
son of Merai′oth, 4son of Zerahi′ah, son of Uzzi, son of Bukki, 5son
of Abishu′a, son of Phin′ehas,
son of Elea′zar, son of Aaron the chief
priest— 6this Ezra went up from Babylonia. He was a scribe
skilled in the law of Moses which the Lord the
God of Israel had given; and the king granted him all that he asked, for the
hand of the Lord his
God was upon him. 7And there went up also to Jerusalem, in the
seventh year of Ar-ta-xerx′es the king, some of the people of Israel, and
some of the priests and Levites, the singers and gatekeepers, and the temple
servants. 8And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth month, which
was in the seventh year of the king; 9for on the first day of
the first month he began to go up from Babylonia, and on the first day of
the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, for the good hand of his God was upon
him. 10For Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the Lord, and to do it, and to teach his
statutes and ordinances in Israel.
The Letter of Artaxerxes to Ezra
11This is a copy of the letter which King
Ar-ta-xerx′es gave to Ezra the priest, the scribe, learned in matters of
the commandments of the Lord and
his statutes for Israel: 12“Ar-ta-xerx′es, king of kings,
to Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven. And now 13I
make a decree that any one of the people of Israel or their priests or Levites
in my kingdom, who freely offers to go to Jerusalem, may go with you. 14For
you are sent by the king and his seven counselors to
make inquiries about Judah and Jerusalem according to the law of your God,
which is in your hand, 15and also to convey the silver and gold
which the king and his counselors have freely offered
to the God of Israel, whose dwelling is in Jerusalem, 16with
all the silver and gold which you shall find in the whole province of
Babylonia, and with the freewill offerings of the people and the priests, vowed
willingly for the house of their God which is in Jerusalem. 17With
this money, then, you shall with all diligence buy bulls, rams, and lambs, with
their cereal offerings and their drink offerings, and you shall offer them upon
the altar of the house of your God which is in Jerusalem. 18Whatever
seems good to you and your brethren to do with the rest of the silver and gold,
you may do, according to the will of your God. 19The vessels
that have been given you for the service of the house of your God, you shall
deliver before the God of Jerusalem. 20And whatever else is
required for the house of your God, which you have occasion to provide, you may
provide it out of the king’s treasury. 21“And I, Ar-ta-xerx′es
the king, make a decree to all the treasurers in the province Beyond the River:
Whatever Ezra the priest, the scribe of the law of the God of heaven, requires
of you, be it done with all diligence, 22up to a hundred
talents of silver, a hundred cors of wheat, a hundred
baths of wine, a hundred baths of oil, and salt without prescribing how
much. 23Whatever is commanded by the God of heaven, let it be
done in full for the house of the God of heaven, lest his wrath be against the
realm of the king and his sons. 24We also notify you that it
shall not be lawful to impose tribute, custom, or toll upon any one of the
priests, the Levites, the singers, the doorkeepers, the temple servants, or other
servants of this house of God. 25“And you, Ezra, according to the
wisdom of your God which is in your hand, appoint magistrates and judges who
may judge all the people in the province Beyond the River, all such as know the

Fasting and Prayer for Protection
21Then I proclaimed a fast there, at the river Aha′va, that we might humble ourselves before our
God, to seek from him a straight way for ourselves, our children, and all our
goods. 22For I was ashamed to ask the king for a band of soldiers
and horsemen to protect us against the enemy on our way; since we had told the
king, “The hand of our God is for good upon all that seek him, and the power of
his wrath is against all that forsake him.” 23So we fasted and
besought our God for this, and he listened to our entreaty.
Gifts for the Temple
24Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests: Sherebi′ah, Hashabi′ah,
and ten of their kinsmen with them. 25And I weighed out to them
the silver and the gold and the vessels, the offering for the house of our God
which the king and his counselors and his lords and
all Israel there present had offered; 26I weighed out into
their hand six hundred and fifty talents of silver, and silver vessels worth a
hundred talents, and a hundred talents of gold, 27twenty bowls
of gold worth a thousand darics, and two vessels of fine bright bronze as
precious as gold. 28And I said to them, “You are holy to
the Lord, and the vessels are holy; and the silver and the gold are a
freewill offering to the Lord, the God of your fathers. 29Guard
them and keep them until you weigh them before the chief priests and the
Levites and the heads of fathers’ houses in Israel at Jerusalem, within the
chambers of the house of the Lord.” 30So the priests and
the Levites took over the weight of the silver and the gold and the vessels, to
bring them to Jerusalem, to the house of our God.
The Return to Jerusalem
31Then we departed from the river Aha′va on the twelfth day of the first month, to go
to Jerusalem; the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the
hand of the enemy and from ambushes by the way. 32We came to
Jerusalem, and there we remained three days. 33On the fourth
day, within the house of our God, the silver and the gold and the vessels were
weighed into the hands of Mer′emoth the priest,
son of Uri′ah, and with him was Elea′zar the son of Phin′ehas,

the Jeb′usites, the Ammonites, the Moabites,
the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2For they have taken some of
their daughters to be wives for themselves and for their sons; so that the holy
race has mixed itself with the peoples of the lands. And in this faithlessness
the hand of the officials and chief men has been foremost.” 3When
I heard this, I rent my garments and my mantle, and pulled hair from my head
and beard, and sat appalled. 4Then all who trembled at the
words of the God of Israel, because of the faithlessness of the returned
exiles, gathered round me while I sat appalled until the evening

sword, to captivity, to plundering, and to utter shame, as at this day. 8But

the house of our God, to repair its ruins, and to give us protection in

command by thy servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land which you are entering,
to take possession of it, is a land unclean with the pollutions of the peoples
of the lands, with their abominations which have filled it from end to end with
their uncleanness. 12Therefore give not your daughters to their
sons, neither take their daughters for your sons, and never seek their peace or
prosperity, that you may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it
for an inheritance to your children for ever.’ 13And after all
that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt, seeing that
thou, our God, hast punished us less than our iniquities deserved and hast
given us such a remnant as this, 14shall we break thy
commandments again and intermarry with the peoples who practice these

does not specifically exclude interracial marriages but the problem here was
the marriage of those of the faith with other idolatrous groups. This also
occurred with the returnees from Zerubbabel (4:3; 6:21) with Nehemiah (Neh.
10:28-30; 13:3; 23-30) and with Ezra here and we see also in Egypt (see Intro.
Pt. I).

Ezra: “We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from
the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of
this. 3Therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put
away all these wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord
and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done
according to the law. 4Arise, for it is your task, and we are
with you; be strong and do it.” 5Then Ezra arose and made the
leading priests and Levites and all Israel take oath that they would do as had
been said. So they took the oath.
Foreign Wives and Their Children Rejected
6Then Ezra withdrew from before the house of God, and went to the chamber of Jehoha′nan the son of Eli′ashib, where he spent the night, neither eating bread nor drinking water; for he was mourning over the faithlessness of the exiles. 7And a proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem to all the returned exiles that they should assemble at Jerusalem, 8and that if any one did not come within three days, by order of the officials and the elders all his property should be forfeited, and he himself banned from the congregation of the exiles. 9Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin assembled at Jerusalem within the three days; it was the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month. And all the people sat in the open square before the house of God, trembling because of this matter and because of the heavy rain. 10And Ezra the priest stood up and said to them, “You have trespassed and married foreign women, and so increased the guilt of Israel. 11Now then make confession to the Lord the God of your fathers, and do his will; separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from the foreign wives.” 12Then all the assembly answered with a loud voice, “It is so; we must do as you have said. 13But the people are many, and it is a time of heavy rain; we cannot stand in the open.
