Symbolism of Numbers

Numbers in the Bible have spiritual significance and are not simply a mathematical progression.

One (1) denotes unity and commencement, especially of the creation. The elohim are one from the progression of Eloah to Elohim but are one under the will of Eloah.

Two (2) denotes difference. Firstly, agreement in testimony concludes evidence. Thus there are always two witnesses required to condemn sin and invoke judgment. (See the paper Law and the Ninth Commandment (No. 262).)

Two also denotes division and this occurs in the sense of being double-minded etc. in speech. This was the work of the second day of the creation.

Three (3) denotes completeness in the sense of three lines to a figure. It was also used in the structure of the satanic system of the Triune god. The third day completed the fundamentals of the creation. The fourth, fifth and sixth days are counterparts of the threefold process of the creation we see on the first, second and third days.

Four (4) (3+1) denotes the creative works and refers to the Earth and the physical things of the creation.

It is in the next phases of the fourth, fifth and sixth days in the activities we see the structure built on that which was laid in the first three days. In this aspect on a year-for-a-day basis we see the parable of the tree. Three days (or years) it is allowed to grow and then in the fourth year it is dunged. No fruit can be eaten during this time. (See the paper Samson and the Judges (No. 73) for the explanation of this parable.)

Five (5) denotes Divine Grace. Being 4+1, it is the works taken with the Spirit of God in peace towards strengthening by trial. Thus the fifth year of the sequence is one of grace and no trial is undertaken fully in this phase.

In Hebrew, Bullinger points out that Ha'aretz (the Earth) by gematria – which is the addition of the numerical value of the letters together – is a multiple of four, while Hashamayim (the heavens) is a multiple of five. The gematria of the Greek term Charis or Grace is also a multiple of five. Five is the leading factor in the Tabernacle measurement.

Six (6) denotes the Human Number. Man was created on the sixth day. The use of this number and all multiples of it are connected with the creation and are a product of man and the created system. Thus the numbers based on six are representative of the work prior to the final rest given by God. It is also the total of labour, being the completion of the sixth day of God's work in the creation. The hours of the day are also divisions of six. So also are the minutes and seconds multiples of six in the ten.

Activity in six is incomplete and indicative of not being sanctioned by God. Athaliah usurped the throne of Judah for six years. This number marks those who have stood in defiance of God such as Goliath, Nebuchadnezzar and later the Antichrist system.

666 is the mark of the Beast system (although some ancient texts also said 612). The mark of the Mystery cults was 666 in the form of the identification with Isis. Her mark was SSS which numerically was 666. Thus the mark of the Beast is the religious system that is based on the Mystery and Sun cults of the Baal-Easter or Isis systems in the Middle East.

Every religious system that embraces Sunday worship and the Easter system carries the mark of the Beast. Each aspect was based on the number six and the compounds of it.

Seven (7) denotes spiritual perfection. It reflects the work of the Holy Spirit as the power of God, as a hallmark does. It is the mark of life and divides the periods of reproduction in animal life. It is the number of rest and the cycle of rest in the Jubilee. It is also the period of return to God in rest and return to His Law, and that is why the Law is read in the Sabbath year of the cycle.

Eight (8) denotes resurrection or regeneration. Thus we see new beginnings and commencement. It is a new first and hence it is the octave in music and associated with colour. It is the Jubilee year in the final cycle of seven sevens as the eighth year, being the fiftieth and the eighth of the cycle only partially overlapping (see the papers Law and the Fourth Commandment (No. 256); Tithing (No. 161); and Reading the Law with Ezra and Nehemiah (No. 250)).

The concept of the eighth day arises also in the offering of Christ as the Wave Sheaf.  Christ rose on the completion of the week at the end of the Sabbath day and Sabbaton as the week (see the paper Timing of the Crucifixion and the Resurrection (No. 159)).

Christ ascended as the Wave-Sheaf Offering on the Sunday at 9 a.m. showing a new beginning of the creation. He returned that day with the Holy Spirit and breathed it on the disciples. That is why there is so much effort to deny the Wave Sheaf and the acceptance of Christ by God in this day. Refer also to the paper The Wave Sheaf Offering (No. 106b).

The number of Iesous (Jesus) is 888 in gematric form also. This number is seen in many aspects of the works of the Lord.

Nine (9) denotes finality of sequence or judgment. It is 3 x 3 and thus a completed structure of activity. This number is found in all factors of judgment.

Ten (10) denotes ordinal completeness and a new commencement as one in the new series.

Eleven (11) is sometimes seen as disorder, but it is incompleteness as it is half the Hebrew alphabet. Also, it is one short of twelve, the number of the units in the divine government.

Twelve (12) denotes the government of God and all multiples of twelve occur in the government.

It denotes the Tabernacle and the priesthood divided according to the tribal units, which themselves represent the Kingdom of God. Look at the paper The City of God (No. 180).

Thirteen (13) is seen as the number of the controlling or regulating unit in the government sequence. For example there were twelve tribes and the thirteenth was Levi that served the Temple. The Calendar of God (see God's Calendar (No. 156)) is regulated by the thirteenth month every seven years in the time cycle of nineteen years.

Thus all rebellion seeks to take over this function as the thirteenth or controlling unit, and the number 13 is often associated with rebellion. We can see this in the first occurrence in Genesis 14:4 and the second confirming that in Genesis 17:25. Dr. Bullinger fails to take account of this aspect of God's activity in his work on the subject at Appendix 10 to The Companion Bible. Names and numbers associated with rebellion seem to have multiples of 13 involved. It is the sixth prime number and hence associated with that concept of the works of man without the completion of God, unless it is as a factor ordered by God in the system of control.

Fourteen (14) is twice seven and thus carries that symbolism. It reduces to five when the numbers are added.

Fifteen (15) is the threefold grace sequence. It is used also by paganism in its numerology (as are all numbers), and reduces to six. Thus this number is also indicative of a false system.

The number 15 is the number of the pagan Roman religion. The number of Pontiffs in the College of Pontiffs in Rome was fifteen. The Mysteries of the Mother Goddess system in its prayer structure was also 15. This is reflected in the so-called Mysteries of the Rosary, which are extant even today. The customs of the mother goddess cult were simply transferred as Mariolatry in the fifth and sixth centuries.

Seventeen (17) denotes a combination of Spirit and order (10+7) and is the seventh prime number.

Twenty-two (22) is the complete number of the Hebrew alphabet in consonants, and denotes completeness.

Twenty-four (24) is the number of the government system as two beings allotted to a system or unit, based on the structure of twelve. There are twenty-four divisions of the priesthood at two to a tribe. There are twenty-four Elders or elohim before the Throne of God as High Priests responsible for the prayers of the saints of the Most High.

Twenty-five (25) is 5 x 5 or grace intensified.

Twenty-seven (27) is 3 cubed and its use needs to be examined carefully. It is indicative of the threefold aspect of the God and the Host tied together with the Holy Spirit.

Twenty-eight (28) is the structure of the Council and the Cherubim and is associated with the creation.

Twenty-nine (29) is the number of the Council under Christ and divine judgment.

Thirty (30) (3 x 10) is the Council with God in divine order and government (see the paper The Government of God (No. 174)).

Forty (40) (10 x 4) is the compound of the concept of the dunging of the tree and as such is the period of probation. Thus all probation is 40. It can be of days as in the case of judgment of individuals as we see with Nineveh (see the paper The Sign of Jonah and the History of the Reconstruction of the Temple (No. 13)). It can also be of compounds of that in weeks, as we see with some priests in judgment.

Forty is also a generation. Israel was a generation in the wilderness in the Exodus. Forty years were applied to Judah from 30 CE at the Crucifixion to 1 Nisan 70 CE at the surrounding of Jerusalem by the Roman Army under Titus.

Forty Jubilees have been allotted to the nations for repentance and to bring in the divine order at the end of the sixth Millennium in 2027.

The four perfect numbers of 3, 7, 10 and 12 have as their product the seven times of 2,520 (7 x 360). This number is the least common multiple of the ten digits governing numeration, being able to be divided by each of the nine digits with no remainder (Bullinger, ibid.). It is thus the number of chronological perfection.

Seventy (70) is the number of the full Councils both heavenly and earthly, and they have two additions as God and Christ making the Hebdomekonta[duo] or the seventy-[two] of Luke 10:1,17.

The number seventy was also of the Sanhedrin or council of the Elders of Israel, which was comprised of seventy, plus the two outside the tabernacle symbolised by Eldad and Medad.

Nations also comprised the seventy, as the sons of God were held to have been seventy in number in the councils of which the Sanhedrin was a copy. These nations were allotted according to the number of the sons of God; the Most High God or Yahovah of Hosts, allotted Israel to another Yahovah (the Being who became Jesus Christ). Deuteronomy 32:8 stated this in the ancient texts. It was altered after the fall of the Temple to disguise that fact. The RSV is the only Bible that has it correctly restored.

Seventy-two (72) relates to the Governing Council of God. As noted above the seventy were understood to be accompanied by two, making seventy-two. These are also the number of the nations under the sons of God.

When Christ began his ministry and established the church he ordained a new Hebdomekonta [duo] or  Seventy [two] when he ordained the Seventy which was written in the Greek as Hebdomekonta [duo] or Seventy-two. The process of the selection of the Seventy continued unabated from that time with the church taking over from the Sanhedrin.

The establishment of the Seventy-two was done on a yearly basis over the time of the church which lasted for 2000 years over forty jubilees.

One hundred and twenty (120) (12 x 10) is the number of extended government. This is the next number in the sequence of the Church.

Three hundred and sixty (360) is the classic time or prophetic year. It is 12 perfect months of 30 days. The time is used in prophecy and can mean a year, but it also means 360 years. Thus “a time, times, and half a time” can be 1260 years or 42 months, i.e. three and a half years. Usually it is in years.

Five hundred (500) is the next number we see in the records of the people to whom Christ appears after his return from the Resurrection and presentation as the Wave Sheaf.

One thousand (1,000) is the number of the Outer Council associated with the capacity of redemption (Job 33:23).

Multiples of these numbers with 1,000 extends the order and structure of God.

Three thousand (3,000) was the great addition to the Church in one day and symbolises a replacement of the priesthood from the losses at Sinai.

Twelve thousand (12,000) is the basic number of core leaders allotted to the tribes as the nucleus of the government of God. The 12 tribes are allotted 12,000 each making 144,000.

One hundred and forty-four thousand (144,000) is the product of the sacrifices in a year making up the council of 72, being the product of the structure inclusive of God and Christ through the Holy Spirit.

There are 52 Sabbaths in the prophetic year along with 12 New Moons and seven Feast sacrifices or offerings. This figure of 71 with the Wave-Sheaf Offering makes 72 perfect human leaders or offerings to God over the forty Jubilees of the Church in the wilderness. The total numbers 144,000 (at 72x2000). See also the paper The Harvests of God, the New Moon Sacrifices, and the 144,000 (No. 120)).

The Great Multitude is associated with the daily sacrifices and is not numbered because Israel is not numbered.

Ezekiel’s Temple shows that the half system is carried into the millennial system, making the harvest ongoing to the Second Resurrection (see also The Resurrection of the Dead (No. 143)).

The City of God is made up of the compound figures of the 144,000 x 2 and the Host. See the paper The City of God (No. 180).
